As a fairly recently diagnosed sufferer of ulcerative colitis,i am worried about the regular doses of steroids I am taking ,not to mention the rest of the medication. Is there any effective natural alternatives available?
I would also be interested in hearing from anyone who could share information on this uncomfortable condition

Ulcerative Colitis
Andrew, my husband had u c at the age of 19. He was sick for months before it was dx. He had a surgery that removed all of his lg. Intestines and a majority of his small intestines. He had a colostony for about 6 months. The re-routed his small intestines and formed what is called a pouch in his stomach. He frequently has loose stool but takes imodium for it. He also stays on a maintance dose of cipro to keep the pouch from getting infected. If you would like to chat with him about it just let me know. Bobbi

Colozide
I am currently on my fourth course of prednisilone in a very short space of time and have been asked to have a bone density scan because of risk of depleated calcium levels.
I think this is because the cololzide I have to take is ineffective so my system is constantly flaring up requiring steroids.
Have you any experiences involving colozide? This is the first thing I was prescribed and i'm hoping there is a more effective form of medication I can use to avoid surgery which at this rate will be inevitable.
I lam 44 and lead a very active lifestyle and don't plan to age gracefully.
I kayak, mountain bike amongst other things.

Ulcerative Colitis
I was diagnosed 23 years ago. Just last year I found a new dr who prescribed steroids for 8 weeks and then off - my colon really cleared up but he wants to see it better - now I take a weekly injection of methotrexate which is suppose to be for many arthritic problems - under the watchful eye of my dr including blood tests each 5/6 weeks - my colon is looking better and better. But I wasted 20 years with drs who took a very lax attitude with my body. Laughing find the best gastro dr who wants to cure you not take all your money. Rolling Eyes

I am taking prednisolone on a decreasing scale alongside colozide. I have found that this combination, so far, has got the problem under control. On my previous treatment the problem flared back up after I got below 20mg of steroids. My dr has said it can take up to a year to get it under control with tablets so I am just being a patient patient !!
