I have a blood disorder called leiden
factor v, this disorder causes clots to
form in the blood stream. Because of
this i'm unable to take birth control.
My question is if I take coumadin (a drug
designed to thin the blood (powerful
asprin)) and birth control would the two
drugs not cancel each other out?

Squeaks,
it is possible that hormonal oral
contraceptives may change the
effectiveness of coumadin (warfarin)
and/or visa versa. It would be best to
speak with your physician and see what
their advice is. It is extremely
important to be on some method of very
reliable birth control while being on
coumadin because if taken while pregnant
will cause birth defects almost every
time. If you doctor does not feel
comfortable putting you on coumadin and
hormonal oral contraceptives together he
may do one of two things: either swtich
you from oral contraceptives to either
norplant or an iud. These are both two
non-hormonal forms of birth control (so
therefore the prescription would not
counteract with it), or he may advise you
to chose heparin as possible blood
thinning agent. Heparin is a lot more
difficult to administer than coumadin
being that it involves 3 shots daily.
I think it would be best to speak with you
physician. Most women of child bearing
age are put if at all possible on some
other form of blood thinner. They and you
don't want to take the risk of possibly
becoming pregnant while being on this
specific type of blood-thinning agent.
Hope to be of some help. Best of luck!
