Can anyone tell me why I would get winded
after walking up a flight of stairs ( i'm
in good shape)?

Stairs are rough.
Between the aerobic aspect to this and the
incline which really works the muscles,
sometimes it can be hard for people who
are even in shape.
It's also a possibility that you don't
breathe normally while walking up the
stairs-- like you may hold your breath
every few stairs, which can cause a
shortness of breath.

Are these particular stairs you're walking
up located in an old building? I'm in
decent shape and I've gotten winded
walking up stairs in old buildings just
because of how dusty and stagnant the air
is.

Is it just stairs that cause you to be
breathless? If not and you're concerned,
you could ask your doctor to check
everything is ok.
Also bare in mind that you use different
muscles in the body for different
activities, if you're not so used to the
activity it's likely you'll find it
difficult despite being fit in other
activities.
For example, I could be a healthy long
distance runner, but not be able to swim a
few lengths without getting out of breath.
