Q: Couple of Questions About First Seizure - Thanks!

Hi all,

last week I had a tonic-clonic seizure. I was taken to the hospital where they performed a ct scan and blood tests and were not able to find any immediate problems.

So, I have an appointment with a neurologist in two weeks, and I was wondering if maybe ya'll might be able to help me out with some questions that are just driving my crazy!!!

The week I had my seizure, my hands would tingle/feel numb for a couple of minutes. Right before my seizure, my hands started doing this really bad. Has anyone else felt this?

Since then, I have felt the tingle/numb thing again, but I have not had another seizure. Sometimes, the tingling/numb thing comes across my head, and my front neck muscles feel really tight for a couple of minutes.

The er doc told me that a lot of times they never find the reason why a seizure happened, so I am getting excited that I have not had another seizure since then; however, the tingling/numb thing continues on a daily basis and concerns me.

The neurologist is going to perform an eeg. Will it be able to sense abnormal activity such as that found in epilepsy even though the seizure was three weeks ago?

My dad has epilepsy. He had his first seizure at 21, and I am 26. My regular doc who referred me to the neurologist is thinking I may have it too, but I read that you are not diagnosed with epilepsy after just one seizure. Has anyone else heard this?

I am sorry this is so long. I am not a patient person, and this is certainly trying what little patience I have.

I appreciate any and all responses.

Thanks so much,

beth

Hello
Hello there beth. Smile
my name is samantha and I live in australia.
8 months ago I had my first grand mal seizure(tonic clonic) and then 7 days after that I had another and then since then I have been having them frequently. No one in my immediate family has epilepsy. All my tests have also came back normal.
You say your hands would go numb...
Well...My feet go numb just to my ankles and then wham bam thank you mam!
Do you know what is going on during your seizure? I mean can you feel yourself doing odd things?
I am told that I have secondary complex partial seizures, and I cant remember what else I have lol.
But I read that up to 70% of epilepsies are unknown.
Just remember that you are not alone. I thought that I was and then I found this website and all most all of my Question were answered. But like you and probably everyone else here I still have that big why question that has not yet been answered for me.
Take care beth talk later.

I Hope This Helps
Hi beth,

it's true that one seizure does not mean epilepsy. Epilepsy is a disorder in which a person has recurring seizures under normal conditions. Well, that's the basic definition. Yours could be isolated. However, since you are still getting the tingling feeling (and that seems to be related), there's a chance that this may happen again.

If this is epilepsy, the tingling is an aura (a simple partial seizure in itself). Your eeg may or may not pick up seizure activity (in the form of interictal spikes). If indeed this is epilepsy, and you have the tingling during your eeg, it will definitely show up.

I see flickering lights every day. They are simple partial seizures, and used to also act as an aura for me before I had a bigger seizure. I rarely have a 'bigger seizure' anymore though due to surgery and medication. My eegs always show interictal spikes regardless of whether i'm seeing the lights are not.

Prior to the week you had the seizure, had you ever experienced this tingling before--even years earlier?

Best wishes and good luck at your neurologist appt. Make sure you like and trust him/her.

Jen
