Q: Is Anybody Receiving Treatment For Secondary Mds?

I am a 67 year old man who was treated for lymphoma with chemotherapy--now in remission for 2 1/2 years. The chemotherapy resulted in secondary myleodysplasia sydrome (mds), precancerous blood disorder, which can lead to leukemia. I am considering becoming part of a trial mini stem cell transplant with my brother who is a match. I am having a consultation at nih about becoming part of a mini stem cell transplant research trial. Has anybody had such a treatment and what was your experience with it? Was it successful? Or does anybody know of someone who has this diagnosis who has been successfully treated with anything else. I am due to go up to this consultation on july 2nd, and would love to go armed with information of others'experience with treatment for this diagnosis.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to read and share your information with me. I am really eager for your information. I have been to several "experts" on this disorder. But would love to hear patient experience.

Appreciatively,

Mds
Hi, my husband harry was diagnosed with mds in feb. But his is not secondary. He had intense chemo in april and we are presently waiting for a donor so he can get a mini bone marrow transplant. He is not doing very well at this time and we are praying emory hosp. Will soon find a donor. Harry is 61 and from what I have read, this is the common age for this disease with no known cure and mainly found in males. I have gone to many sites on the web and read as much as I can find on this disease. You are blessed to have a brother, as I understand that is the closest match for a donor and I am sure you will recover without a problem. Harry does not have a brother so finding the right donor is a very long wait or it seems that way. Keep your spirits up, and good luck.

Reply to Marge About Bone Marrow Transplant
Dear marge, I thank you for answering my topic. I am sorry to hear that your husband is not doing well and I hope that a donor will be found for him. I,too, have been doing a lot of reading about mds. Your husband is lucky that his is not secondary mds because, from my reading, it is more"intractable " to treatment. We have to look on the bright side of each of our situations to get the strength to keep on keeping on. So,god bless you, and I will let you know what happens when I return from my consultation at nih about our decision about having a mini stem cell transplant.
Sincerely,
father larry
