Q: "is Tv Toxic?"

My landlord brought this down for me to read, I just thought maybe some of you girls would find this interesting and possibly kinda like helpful...It was in "ladies home journal"...

"is tv toxic?"

"the average toddler watches two to three hours of tv a day, and it turns out that's two or three hours too many. In the first study to look at the effects of tv on toddlers attention spans, researchers at childrens hospital and regional medical center, in seattle, found that each hour of tv watched daily by a child 12 months to 3 years increased the risk of attention span problems, such as adhd, by age 7. According to the study the rapid change of images on the screen- the very thing that keeps kids engaged- overstimulates them at a critical phase of brain developement. And educational programing doesnt get off the hook either. "during the first two to three years of life the brain is being fine-tuned," explains dimitri a. Christakis, m.D., the lead researcher ont the study. "and, in contrast to the way real life unfolds, tv can portray rapidly changing scenes and condition a toddlers brain to expect this fast pace" -written by lambeth hochwald

Thats really interesting. I know a lot of kids who watched tons of tv when they were really little who do not have adhd now...Maybe it only affects a few kids?

Hey
That is bull. I know tons of kids who watch tv a lot and do't have any effects from it. As well as my own siblings watched a lot of tv at a young age and they have no attention span problems.

I dont think its bull. They wouldnt just say that if they didnt know for sure and they wouldnt just make it up. Alot of people dont even find out that they have a problem til they are alot older (my mom didnt know she had aadd unil she was around 37)...

Having add doesnt mean you are dumb, it just makes it harder for you to pay attention, and you have to find a way where you learn best, like one on one work (instead of a classroom) and other things, it depends on the person. When you have add you get easily distracted (like by classmates). And it usually doesnt show up until around middle school or highschool.

Im going to avoid putting my kid in front of the tv as much as I can. I have add and both my parents do too, so im sure my kid has a higher risk of gettin it... I dont want my kid to have the same problems in school I did.

I dont believe it....The boob tube practically raised me and I have no problems paying attention.....Josh likes to watch tv with me too! You can't necessaruly believe everything you read, like parenting magazines, some of those people who write the articles dont even have kids!!! I mean, if they are going to write about kids, dont u think they ought to have some? Lol.....
