Hi,
i was just diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Has anyone had any success reversing thier diabetes with low-carb diet (atkins, southbeach, that sort)? I have only had the disease for a few weeks and am determined to reverse it if at all possible! Would appreciate your input or advice on anything to do with diabetes. I go back and forth from determined to depressed. Already being familiar with low-carb has made it much easier I think.
Thanks all!

Don't be depressed, but take this disease very serious. I didn't for years and as a result of my stupidity I have lost the sight in my left eye and also have nephropathy. This kidney failure is scaring me the most. My advice to you is to loose any extra weight if you have any. To exercise as much as you can and most important take your blood sugar readings frequently.
Good luck

Reversing Type 2 Diabetes
Metformin ........ Get it or buy it off the internet. That works wonderfully, also eat as your teeth want you to eat your not a carnivore, or a herbivore, but an omnivore so eat more fruit and vegtables. That cant be hard can it? Read the new scientist its online you dont have an excuse. Then lastly stop letting catholics, republicans, and the scientific illiterates dictate what is a scientific truth. Speak up for not just your rights but animal rights. Science should be cruelty free. Got it. Good!

Bad News: you'll never stay on a diet. It aint gonna happen. The normal diabetic diet is restrictive enough as it is. You should see the weight loss diet for diabetics. There's NOTHING to eat.

In 48 years I have never weighed more than 105 pounds. I'm 5'3. However I was seriously ill with an antibiotic resistant disease I got from one of my students from Mexico. They come up here w/ TB, cholera, whooping cough, scarlett fever you name it whatever we've erradicated here they immigrate w/. It's not their fault Mexico has such bad health care. At any rate at one point I had a bonfire of a fever that was soaking through my matress. I was dying. One of the drugs they used to save me caused me to gain 85lbs.

Not only did I recover the weight gain caused me to become a diabetic. I have now lost 53lbs. But I didn't diet. I eat what I'm supposed to, test 5 times a day (I'm a little paranoid) and exercise 5x a week for an hour. I ride a lifecycle in my garage and watch a movie or TV. By the time my 1 hour alarm goes off I'm so into what I'm watching I feel like I just started.

DO NOT IGNORE YOUR DISEASE. It can and will kill you in the end if you don't take care of yourself. Sorry but it's the harsh truth of the matter. Byetta is an injectable drug that many people say helps you lose lots of weight but the first two weeks are miserable. There are seriously bad side effects. If you have time to have a constant headache and barf all day for two weeks go for it. After two weeks it's all supposed to subside. Whatever you do do not go into denial and go drinking, eat like you used to etc... You'll be doing yourself a lot of harm in the long run.

I don't want to be mean but the faster you accept your situation the better off you'll be. And MOVE exercise is key. Good luck! Blythe

Also do not be upset. There are lots and lots of us in the same boat and we support each other. My husband is a Type 1 diabetic and he is the healthiest person I've ever seen. 6'5 230 lbs. He has a six pack and the rest of him rocks. If you do what you're supposed to you'll end up being much healthier than you were before because being a diabetic means eating healthy. If you workout too you'll end up like my husband. OR you'll have a body that you can break bricks on, breasts that float and a washboard stomach. Sound good? You'll get used to the restrictive diet soon enough. It's not bad. It kind of liberated my taste buds actually. But you can do it. Just be positive. You are part of an elite group now. God only gives this disease to strong people with a will to overcome any odds. It's a lot better than being milk toast. Agree?

I don't think you can reverse it, but you can control it. Type 2 can be anywhere from diet-controlled to insulin dependant. Are you seeing a family physician or an endocrinologist? Depending on how high your bs is (blood sugar), you will be started on diet and excercise or metformin. You should also be testing your bs regularly. Again, depending on how high your levels are, test several times a day or week. Are you on medication? or diet. If you have any more questions, ask away!!
