Q: Do I Have Alopecia?

I am 23 years old and have had one of the most stressful years of my life. My boyfriend (now husband) was stationed in iraq from feb to august. In sept. I lost my step-mom to a massive heart attack. In october, I took a new job. By nov. I was engaged and planning a wedding for april. In march my hubby's mom had a severe stroke. We had to marry a month early without the wedding that had so stressfully consumed my life while planning. In april, I moved away from everyone I know to hawaii where my husband is stationed and am coping with military life as a newly-wed all the while still grieving for my step-mom. I know stress can make you lose your hair, but I want to know what kind of hair loss I am experiencing. In january, I realized I had a tiny bald spot, smaller than my pinkie finger nail on the side of my head. I woke up one day in april to realize it was the size of a quarter. Panicked, I collected what little snapshots I had from my wedding day in march and sure enough, the spot is there under my already thin hair (god did not bless me with thick hair so what I can't afford to lose any)! Now the spot is growing back in, but I realize now I have another one on that same side of my head, just behind the ear that is starting to fall out. I wonder if this pattern of losing and growing hair will ever stop. All I can add besides the stress factor is that this past winter I suffered from dry scalp, especially in locatized places on the side of my head where I am now losing my hair. I am trying to get all info I an get on alopecia and other hair losses to see what may be wrong with me. Any input?

Extremely eHealthy
See my post on this forum to another victim of hair loss it details hoe my daughter overcame hairloss (30-60 minute walks at around dawn (perfect in hawaii!!) 50-100mg pd of 5htp, foods high in tryptophan (google for a list), yoga, meditation & relaxation.

Also ginseng hair tonic is good for hair problems and general hair health & you can also get ginseng shampoo & conditioner - the tonic apparently (i know a couple of people who have used it & found this) helps "thicken" hair.

But it does seem as if your system(like my dauhghter's last year) has just gone into overload & you need to relax, destress & then things will start to heal.

Old post but what the hell

what you have are tiny bald patches that is a temporary pattern called
alopecia aereata (spell check). It goes away on it's own. The body actually attacks itself which causes the bald spots

i had 4 of them on the back of my head and they grew back after 5-6 months. Dr first gave me some cortisteroid fluid to rub into the spots which didnt work for couple months. What really worked for me was rogaine and cortizone shots from the dermatologist once a month. This sped the hair growth back pretty fast.
