Hysterectomy to Have Or Not Posted: 09-18-03 08:25am
I am 35 yrs old and two kids. I have one
baseball size fibroid tumor by ultrasound.
I have childbirth like cramps the first
two days of my cycle but no heavy bleeding
(that my dr think is heavy) she is not
recommending a hysterectomy at this time.
I guess I am sacred that it will grow
bigger. I am not comfortable with
something that size in me. I didn't want
more children. So is it wrong to want
this surgery to remove this?

Hysterectomy Posted: 09-23-03 02:19am
Hi tdshaw,
my mum is 43 and she had to have a
hysterectomy beacuse she had a fibroid
tumor on her ovary the size of a football,
it was so big her stomach was bloated out,
it had grown over a period of 2 years and
she never got it checked. Now I make her
go to the doctor for regular checkups.
The only thing was that it brought on
menopause so she has to take hormone
treatment. She suffers a few yucky side
effects from the menopause like hot and
cold flushes ( mostly hot ), tiredness all
the time although she also has high blood
pressure problems which doesn't help with
that. When the menopause first started
she felt like ants were crawling under her
skin, itchy all the time. These things
possibly won't affect you if you have a
hysterectomy, every woman is very
different and will respond differently to
the treatment.
Good luck!! Hope everything works out for
you.

Every Woman Is Different.... Posted: 01-08-04 18:59pm
Hi td,
the reason that I titled it that is
because we are so different. My mother
had a grapefruit size tumor in her uterus
for almost 10 years, but never felt it or
had any problems with it.
I am 48, 47 when I had my hysterectomy.
I had to have one because I had three
fibriods in and on my uterus, the largest
was about the size and shape of a pear.
It was sitting on the lining of my uterus
and cause almost continual bleeding..Not
heavy..But I had bleeding almost every day
for about 1 year. It wasn't heavy enough
to make me anemic, just uncomfortable.
The dr put me on hormones to help when the
bleeding got heavy. I was hoping that
they would change in size and I wouldn't
have to have the surgery, but they didn't,
and I decided that I had had enough, so I
went ahead with the surgery.
If the fibroid that you have isn't causing
you any problems, I would say wait. Look
on the internet for options as far as not
having the surgery, but different
treatments that would shrink the size.
If your doctor doesn't give you any
options, check with another. I don't
know where you live, but the state of
washington allows you to be seen by any
ob-gyn doctor of your choice and the
insurance has to pay.
Good luck..And don't be concerned until
you have continual problems...Then insist
on some kind of treatment before it
effects your life.
