Q: Diagnosed With Hashimotos!

I have been ill for 4 whole months. At first, I had palpitations, a burning feeling under the skin, excesssive sweating, and extreme hunger. I was eating a lot, but lost weight.

I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. I was then sent for a thyroid scan with radioactive iodine, but the gland would not absorb the iodine. The morning of the test, they had to inject it into my arms to get the pictures they wanted.

My doctor refused to give me anti-thyroid drugs. He said that hyperthroidism was due to hashimotos syndrome and would disappear. I went through 2 months - bed ridden. Then as I began to feel less severity of the symptoms, I was told my tsh, t-4 and t-3, were now normal. However, I still have the excessive sweating and "burning up."

i went to an endocrinologist, that said I did not have hashimotos, but subacute thyroiditis. And now, I have gone hypo! Very hypo, but I still have the symptoms of someone with hyperthyroid. Can someone help me?

Hashimoto's
Hey vanillasky! I was just diagnosed with hashimoto's after years of not knowing what was wrong. I also was diagnosed 13 yrs. Prior with being hyper - yes, it can be confusing. From what I have read, you can be be hyper and then turn hypo. If you don't like what your doctor is saying, by all means, get a new one! The endocrinologist I am seeing at least gives me pretty straight forward answers. If I have any doubt, I do research it on the web just to make sure.

I hope everything turns out for you!

Hashimoto's Thyroiditis
I have hashimoto's and I have an underactive thyroid. Hashimotos is an inflammation of the thyroid and it comes and goes. I had a goiter (the thyroid bulged out of the right side of my neck. I had 2/3 of the thyroid removed because of food stuffs in the thyroid and polps. A year or so ago, I had a growth or something in the middle, had a biopsy and was told that the thyroid was so calcified that they never saw anything like it, and they also dxd me with hashimoto's. Someone with hyper does not need the thyroid hormone, but someone with hypo does. I would keep after the endo to see what can be done. Good luck.

Subacute thyroiditis is viral. It's normal to be hyper and then go hypo, however, it should stabalize itself at some point. I was dx with subacute thyroiditis a few years ago and was not given any meds. My symptoms had stabalized after several months. Good luck.
