Real_Woman, what you get when you are on hormonal birth control is not a real menstruation (no pun intended).

Menstruation is when the uterus lining prepares for possible implantation by thickening and getting rich in blood and nutrients. When this thickened lining sheds and dissolve, we call it menstruation.

The birth control pills stops this preparation of the uterus lining (it is one of the ways the pill work, prevent implantation by not preparing the lining).

So to make you feel good, the pill manufacturers include these 7 days of hormone free pills. These pills will allow the hormone levels in your body to drop so low that your uterus wall will just start bleeding because there is not enough hormones to prevent it. This does not have to happen on every day of the inactive pills. Sometimes your hormone levels will plain not drop low enough for the bleeding to start (and the pregnancy test makers will make some money). Sometimes this can even happen outside the 7 day inactive window.

This is just something most women on the pill get used to and live with. In general you should bleed for at least some days during the 7 inactive days. If you bleed for all 7 days, good for you. If you do not bleed at all, make sure you are not pregnant and good for you.

This artificial nature of the monthly bleeding also allows you to control your flow somewhat. If you skip the inactive pills and start with the active pills of the next pack immediately, you can avoid bleeding at all. This is also how the 4 periods a year pill works. It is packaged with 81 active pills and 7 inactive pills.

Currently it is recommended to do this in 3 month cycles. Soon we should have an FDA approved pill that will have 358 active pills and 7 inactive pills. A whole year without a period!

Best of luck!

Bara, every woman is different. Your bleeding time will normally not be from day 1 to day 7 of the inactive pills. It should be shorter, lighter and less uncomfortable and happen some time during the 7 day week.

Your body may also take a while to adjust to the pills. Different pills also affect your bleeding differently. The type of start you made (first day/first sunday/quick start) can aslso affect your first cycle.

If you followed the instructions and read the insert that came with the pack, the chances of the pill failing is very extremely low.

It is however still your responsibility to monitor yourself and make sure you take a pregnancy test if you think you might be pregnant.

Best of luck!

hi everyone - wow it's nice to know i'm not alone here!

I made the biggest mistake in my life 2 months ago when I had sex without protection (I had just gone off the pill), and became pregnant, which was the biggest shock of my life. I had an abortion last month, which I'm really grateful for. Through this process I've learnt a lot more about pregnancy and contraceptions (thankgoodness)!

As for the girls who are even slightly doubting if they are pregnant - get a pregnancy test. They cost the same as a McDonalds meal Smile
If the results are negative but you still don't have a period, try the pregnancy test again 4 weeks counting from the first day of your last period, it should show up if you were pregnant but was too early to show up on the test.

Also - you are NOT protected from pregnancy from the first day of taking the pill!! Poor girl, the doctor who told you that it would is terribly wrong Sad

All the best girls!

I'm on the third day of the sugar pills and I haven't gotten my period yet. I've been a little loose with my timing and taking the pills, sometimes I'd miss a day, and sometimes I take it a few hours late, and I've had an active sex life with my boyfriend. Should I be worried, or should I just wait it out?

HELPPPPPP!!!
Hey,
So I had unprotected sex on Friday night, and that was my last day for the active pill, and for the past 2 days I've been taking my sugar pills. But I've only just started the pill so this is the fist blister pack I've used and I don't know which days my period comes on with the sugar pills. I'm freaking out that I'm pregnant... I JUST WANT MY PEROID TO COME! I've been crampy, but my period isn't coming. Should I be freaking out? I'm contemplating taking the morning after pill just to be sure? What do you think???

on sugar pills and no period...
i've been on the pill for almost 2 years, i'm on the second day of sugar pills and i haven't gotten my period yet. i'm one of those girls who "likes getting a period". Getting one every month keeps me sane lol. i had protected sex a few days ago and i don't think the condom broke...im starting to get paranoid about not getting my period now. any advice?

girlywirly; hello
no it does not mean your b/c is not working
generally speaking any unusual bleeding should be checked but u don't give enough info
age, height, weight what pills, how long have u been on them, how regular r your periods and for how long etc.
the brown just says it is older blood and probably not a big deal but without the other info no one can give u an answer but to go see dr.
SO DON'T worry about b/c not working for and good luck

hi, I could not find your noriman so u must be outside the U.S. and perhaps it is a country name which is common
u should have an insert with your prescription so read it carefully as it may be common to this particular birth control, also call the dr office and ask to speak to nurse or leave a message requesting info on your bleeding.
u r obviously very thin. has your weight been stable in the last year
u can use a douche if it is plain water
were your periods stable prior to this b/c
did u have unprotected sex in last week
good luck
