Q: Ibs?

I have been researching irritable bowel syndrome on the internet – this is something a friend of mine suffers from, and some of the symptoms of ibs sound like what I experience. However, he and I also have different problems.

I am 24 years old. For as long as I can remember, I have had problems with my digestive system. As a child I can remember experiencing acute, painful diarrhoea, especially after intense exercise or taking a course of antibiotics. Lately, I have noticed I also experience these symptoms if I drink beer or chocolate or eat too much. I usually experience abdominal cramps that come in waves about 15mins apart, starting as an unsettled feeling and developing into severe cramps - a ‘wave’ of cramps passes after I pass wind. Over a period of one or two hours the cramps intensify until I reach the point where I have to rush to the toilet. I then usually experience acute diarrhoea – the cramps usually continue during this bowl movement, but eventually subside – sometimes after half an hour or so, I experience further cramps and need to rush to the toilet again. After this, I am usually constipated for one or two days.

My bowel movements can be regular ie once or twice a day. However, more often than not I have an unsettled/bloated feeling in my bowel, not painful, but irritating and sometimes has an impact on how well I sleep – this can sometimes lead to excessive passing of wind but usually nothing more. When I do pass wind, sometimes it smells horrible.

I sometimes also experience itchiness around the anus and mild rectal bleeding, typically appearing as a small amount of bright red blood spotting or streaking toilet paper after a bowel movement.

You might try these sites for information on the specific carbohydrate diet etc which is basically what my daughter who has ibs follows - but - everyone is different she is more likely to be constipated but another friend who has it is more like you. It also seems to depend on what you eat & how much again with each person having to use trial & error to figure out what is right for them. My daughter initially was led to believe that processed meats were out - yet just last week she discovered that hungarian salami (or at least the type she ate!!) is great.

There is no absolute rule of thumb for ibs. Symptons will vary from individual to individual, but do include the one's you mentioned in your post.

Many people find that emptying their bowel brings a degree of relief as does passing wind.

Gastroenterologistss general suggest that patients keep their intake of sugary products like chocolate to a minimum.

A diet which contains easy to digest foods such as rice along with a good supply of vegi's is often helpful to some patients.

Slightly green banana's are also considered good, along with peppermint tea.

The itchy feeling and slight bleeding is most likely associated with hemorrhoids which are a common side affect of ibs.

Ibs Unique to Each Person
You really do have to find out by trial & error what works for you - my daughter is so allergic to bananas that even the word makes her feel squarmish.

She does have to keep sugars (including simple natural sugars found in fruits) to a minimum & can not eat chocolate etc (although there's a danish chocolate - exquisite taste - but abit pricey - without sugar that she can have) - she can also have many foods made with splenda. She can not have rice, pasta, breads, cakes etc - anything with gluten is out(almond flour is ok but not soy in her case but many people are ok with soy). Also out is wheat & many additives.

Like I said you have to do the research & use trial & error.

I have exactly the same symptoms as you - cramping, bad gas, alternating d & c and I also suffer from hemorrhoids. Unfortunately I can't seem to find a magic cure for my ibs but I do find that peppermint and fennel tea really helps. I've also cut down on dairy products which seems to cause me less d. Good luck!
