Hey everyone,
I am 18 and recently me and my boyfriend decided I should go on birth control, because sometimes condoms break on us. Well my biggest concern is weight gain! Evil or Very Mad I really cannot afford to gain more weight, I mean i'm not obese but I am slightly over weight. So I was just wondering if any of you could fill me in on the pill brands that are notorious for causing weight gain for many women, and as well those that are known for weight loss usually. This would really help me. I know that my doctor will recommend the pill but what if I have to chose between two or something. Please respond.

You can never tell which pill will cause you to lose or gain weight.. Each pill is different on everyones body. Either you get lucky, or you don't. Basically when you go to the doctors office he/she will decide whats the best for you, and from that tell him/her about your fear of gaining, and what you should do if indeed you do start gaining, they should give you an option. Good luck!

That was my fear as well when I first started going on bc, I am not obese.. But cuold stand to shed a few... I was put on marvelon 28 and have been on it for 5 months now. I know that I have gained some from it, but how much im not quite sure cuz I don't want to step on the scale to find out! Haha.. I know that I didn't gain as much as some people do, bit I sure as heck didn't lose any either. But in the end I figure that I can always get rid of those pounds, but I can never get rid of a baby.

Hi,
talk to your doctor she'll know best. Third generation pills (the newer ones on the market now) aren't supposed to cause weight gain, or if the do minimal weight gain (though marvelon does have this as a reported side effect - the average gain is just over 1 lb - which could be attributed to anything) and in fact some pills (yasmine comes to mind) have reported weight loss abilities. (don't get too excited though - it's only an aver 1-2 lb weight loss and again, it's not everyone). My doctor told me when I started marvelon and inquired about weight gain that it is not even considered a side effect with most of the new drugs and the fact that people claim that it is is 90% of the time just women trying to rationalize thier unheathly habits and weight gains.
Those things aside, there are b/c methods which cause weight gain - the depo shot comes to mind, and if you do experience rapid weight gain contact your doctor and have her switch you pills. But keep in mind one thing - it may not be weight gain just bloating - since with bcp's your body is put in a state of false pregnancy you may bloat up a little without really gaining any weight. Weigh youself on a scale to be sure.
Best of luck
~ laura
