I have been on dilantin for 13 years and am now being changed over to topamax. I have been having alot of the same side effects, not being able to find the word I want to say, forgeting what I want to say. The other day in the bank I forgot how to write my own signature. Right now I am taking 100mg of dilantin an 25mg of topamax in the morning and 100mg of dilantin at night. Is this more of a side effect of being taken with my dilantin or is this the topamax.

Annette,
i haven't been on dilatin in years and don't really remember the side effects I had from it.... But the topamax, yes it will make you forget your own name..... I've been on it for several months now and my doc has pushed my dose up to 500 mg a day. And that was where I said no more because it was to the point of almost not being able to tie my own shoe.
It does level it self off a bit after your on a steady dose for awhile but I still do struggle with finding the right words when i'm talking, and have a hard time doing things like writing a check, or doing any kind of math.
I'm also very tired.... And I don't eat alot anymore. I'm thirsty all the time too....And now that its warming up all I want is something cold to drink.
If you have any other questions just ask...
Jill

For me, topamax was horrible. It made me extreemly tired, every now and then a random part of my body would suddenly go numb, I had a hard time coming up with words, and every morning I would have double vision. That last part was probably the coolest thing. For the first 15 minutes I was awake it was like waving your hand in front of a computer screen. It was fun but probably not good. So I had to get off the med. Oh yea and it gave me hiccups. I would have a hiccup once about every half an hour. Just one but it was pretty consistent. Crazy, I know but what can you do.
