Q: I Lose My Voice When Under Stress!

I have developed a problem with laryngitis when i'm in stressful situations. For example, when I have to deliver a speech or be interviewed for a job, I often find myself unable to "project" my voice with adequate volume. I can tell that people have trouble hearing me in these situations. The more stress I feel, the softer my volume becomes; also, the quality of my voice changes, with the sound becoming less "full" and more falsetto-like (the pitch doesn't get much higher, but it sounds very weak, like a falsetto voice). When I feel stressed before a speech or a meeting, I try to "warm up" my voice in private, but it doesn't seem to help and often makes me hoarse. Also, I try clearing my throat in these situations, but it doesn't seem to help either. Oddly enough, I have found that taking chewable pepcid ac (for acid indigestion) sometimes helps temporarily. This is really undermining my confidence in important situations. Please help! Thank you. -bill

Hi there,

i'm a singer and it happens to me too, when I get too stressed the sound woun't come out as loud. And I can end up hurting myself. You should take singing classes, it will help you relax and make your body learn how to let the sound out, instead of forcing it out.

Cheers
