I was diagnosed with bipolar when I was 14 years old. They srated me on lithium and I have been on it since. I am also on depakote and paxil cr. (for my anxiety and panic disorder) we recently strted questioning whether I was actually bipolar or not. After a lot of research and many different doctors they told me I di have bipolar but the childhodd version of the disorder. ( I am 23 and usually by now it would have taken the adult form) for those who do not know a lot about the childhood disorder instead of being super high and super low I am kinda high and kinda low but my fits or episodes come from being told no. Kinda sounded like a temper tantrumm to me. I usually have a lot or rage and emotion that cycles very rapidly when I have these fits. Lately I have noticed a lot more anxiety than normal, horrible intense vivid and sometimes scary dreams, I can't seem to wake in the morning but by mid afternoon I am sky high. I do not know what is going on with me. My doctors appointment is next week. Has anyone experienced anything like this?

Very often medications (or a combination of meds) can cause extremely real & distressing/emotionally disturbing dreams. Recently this happened to me - I was unlucky as this side effect was almost unheard of with the particular medicine - which didn't help as it took longer to figure out what was going on. Meantime I was having dreams that were so real I was often unsure of whether I had dreamt a conversation or it had actually happened. Plus there were the nightmarish dreams which were so real I would feel the fear even a few days later!!

I would suggest that you first of all check & recheck the meds you are on. Second undrestand that when our system is thrown out of whack (for any eason) it responds in an out of whack way (this too can be made worse by meds!!) so being high in the afternoon & unable to wake in the morning may all just be a part of the same problem - meds & not necessarily you!!

Purple333-

what meds are you on? Do you mind sharing which one gave you the nightmares? It seems that I have these surreal dreams a few nights to a week or so and then won't have them for awhile. I do not know if they are related to any new meds or not. My mom says when I was very little I had nightmares that were really bad and I wasn't on any meds yet.

Krazy,

i would gladly tell you what caused the horrid nightmares but I honestly forget the name (although it was only this year) as so much has been going on, in any case what causes such an effect on one person may not on another, alos a med you have been on before or even for a good while which was ok, can become a bad problem for tonnes of reasons.

Right now i'm on vioxx, progout, diaphormin, stillnox, weight loss tabs, 5htp, valerian, (trying some of the more natural stuff) - I was taking dhea but stopped as it seemed to be having some weird side effects - I will try it again shortly to see whether the side effects were real or coincidence~~ remember that tablets here may be under different names to those you get.

My son (9) may be bi-polar I am doing some research into this but find that many of the "symptoms" are also symptomatic of other things, this is made worse by the fact that he is not only extremely bright but also very sensitive to spirits (as in ghosts not alcohol!!) etc which causes him to be scared to sleep alone - so he sleeps with me!! Despite being 9 & extraordinarily independent in every other regard. Which makes me wonder if perhaps your nightmares are to do with sensitivity to the spirit world & I would also suggest that you do some personal research into whether you feel that you are truly bi-polar, doctors so often get things wrong, I can not count the times I have come across wrong diagnoses of myself, both children, family etc in so many areas (physical, mental you name it!!).

If you want to pm me to talk please do.
