Hi everyone! I was diagnosed with graves disease over a year ago and was put on tapazole. (sorry if I spelled it wrong) after a year my thyroid went in remission but only for 4 months. Nows its slowing going hyper active again.

Has anyone else had this problem? My doctor wants me to swallow the raidoactive stuff, but I am afraid. I want to go back on the tapazole for another year. Any advise would be helpful?

Hypoeractive Thyroid
I was also recently diagnosed with graves disease. I will have the radioactive iodine in a week. I did research on the treatment options on the internet before my appointment with the specialist. My doctor recommended the iodine. The truth is the thyroid suppressing drugs such as you have been on do not work for everyone. The radioactive iodine is relatively painless and can completely stop hyperactive thyroid in 2-3 months. Aftewr that you may be hypo and need thyroid supplements. The dosage of the supplements will be tweaked until you feel good and blood tests show your levels are good. However if you have small children as I do you have to take some precautions for a week or so after the ttreatment. You will be slightly radioactive and to limit your child's exposure you need to not expose them to your urine or salva, they can't sleep with you or stay on yor lap or too close to you.Do a google search and find out more.Good luck.

i was diagnosed with hyper and graves diease in April. I have lost now about 55lbs. I have had the radio iodine treatment and now it is just a waiting game. the radio iodine treatment wasnt bad at all, my doc told me that some people have a real bad soar throat after the treatment but i did not. i have a 14 and a 10 year old so i had to stay away from them for like 3 days. good luck to you and let us know how you are doing.

I Also Have Thyroid (hyper)
i have hyperthyroid and is currently on tapazole, however i plan to stop taking it once it runs out. my thyroid was high for a while, then it was normal for a while, until i had my blood test which shows the t3 or t4 to be really high. i forgot the exact numbers. anyway, the medicine (tapazole) is making me gain weight even though i barely eat at all. maybe a bite or two throughout the whole day and that's it. i have no urge to eat like i used to when i was not on the medicine, and i don't seem to be losing any weight. i remember at one point i was at 105 lbs which is extremely underweight. i mean i'm still skinny right now but i'm not losing any weight even though i dont eat!!. i do sleep a lot with this thyroid condition. more than 12 hrs each day. the rest of the time i'm really depressed. my doctor also discussed the radioactive iodine as a possible treatment or surgery but i don't think i will do it cus its not natural. WHy destroy something that was origininally there for a reason and my belief is that if it can become hyper by itsself, it can become normal as well.

Hello Everyone
Just thought that I would send you all a little message to let you know that having a thyroid disease has its ups and downs. I am 35 years old and was diagnosised when I was 12 years old. I had surgery when I was 16 and then radition when I was 18. Still to this day I continue taking meds and right now I am having problems and the doctor claims that is could have something to do with my body changing (getting older) It is difficult to deal with but keep your head up high and you will make it through it. Katy as for gaining your weight back that is a hard question to answer as everyone responses different to treatments. What you can't do is go untreated to keep the weight off. This is something that needs to be treated.
