Q: Can I Have Contact Lenses And Glasses At the Same Time?

Hello,
i have a new pair of glasses (-4.25 and -5.25) vs and old pair (-3.25 and -4.50). For distance vision, ie. Driving things are perfect, but for closeup reading, computer use etc I find that my eyes are "stressed".

My question is, can I wear a pair of contact lenses that give the effect of my old prescription (-3.25/-4.50) and then just add/wear a pair of glasses for driving that will bring my "total" prescription to an effective -4.25/-5.25?

Any other ideas?

Thanks very much.

in my experience, I wouldn't say that is such a good idea. Your new prescription is ideal to correct your current vision, but wearing your old prescription may cause your eyesight to worsen. As you've said, you've felt that your eyes are "stressed" when viewing closeup objects, that is because you're making the eye do more work (squinting, may even cause soreness), which in turn damages the retina. Other more serious affects may lead to the eyes becoming red and irritated, dryness which may in turn cause permanent scarring if not enough oxygen is being reached. (on contacts)

wearing the wrong prescription (for glasses) may lead to eye strain, problems with depth perception, headaches, blurred vision, and in some cases even eye turns.

My suggestion to you is to rid of your old prescription and get ones that match your prescription

Glasses For Closeup Work Over Contacts
The easiest solution for you would to wear contacts with the correct distance rx and then put on a pair of 1 or possibly .75 reading glasses on top of the contacts for close up work.

The diopter add basically brings things in closer and relieves some of the stress.

I think you might want a lower than 1 correction to move in to focus on a computer screen.

Obviously you could do as you suggested and have a pair of - 1 diopter glasses made but these would cost over $100 when for $5 you can try on some cheap .75 or 1 diopter reading glasses & see if this solution works for you.
