An excellent article by George Monbiot in today's Guardian:
Face facts, Cardinal. Our awful rate of abortion is partly your responsibility

Can be found here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/20 08/feb/26/health.religion

Essentially, the argument goes that those who impede access to birth control are to blame for unwanted pregnancies and hence abortions.

Sample paragraph: "A paper published by the British Medical Journal assessed four programmes seeking to persuade teenagers in the UK to abstain from sex. It found that they "were associated with an increase in the number of pregnancies among partners of young male participants". This shouldn't be surprising. Teenagers will have sex whatever grown-ups say, and the least familiar with contraception are the most likely to become pregnant. The more effectively religious leaders and conservative papers anathemise contraception, sex education and premarital sex, the higher abortion rates will go."

I'll never understand the reasoning behind blocking women from preventing unwanted pregnancy. What's worse is stopping women from getting treatment for gynecology ailments that if left untreated could become VERY serious and cause the fusion of internal organs as well as destroy fertility. Prolifers that are against contraception are nothing more than woman hating lunatics that only use the abortion issue as a smokescreen for their prejudice.

I think in America we should have access to free birth control like it is in other countries. Birth control pills are expensive let me say.

I don't understand why people would want to block birth control AND be against abortion....you can't have it both ways.

There are days when I not only think birth control should be free but we should be paying folks to use it. Sort of a reward system for those who are trying to be responsible.

Actually, some methods of "birth control" amount to the same thing as an abortion, morally. So it's six of one, half a dozen of the other.

Well it depends when you think life occurs. Morally to you it may be the same as an abortion but not to other people.

"Life" in the biological sense occurs at all times that an organism is "alive".

"Life" in the biological sense is not something that stops and then starts again, it is a continuum that has existed for eons, and is passed down from one living parent to a living child uninterrupted.

Fertilization is a unique stage in the process of reproduction, however, because it is the only point of development which could logically be considered the beginning of the existence of each new human being.

Your opinion on what happens when inside of a woman's body doesn't entitle you to decide what she can or cannot use to prevent pregnancy and treat feminine health issues.

Of course not.

But do you have any comment on the process of reproduction itself, as far as when life "begins", and how? I'd be much more interested in that than in your personal attitude toward me.
