Q: plaquenil for schleroderma causing bipolar ?

In 2006 I was diagnosed with Schleroderma and put on plaquenil for RA. Within a year of this diagnosis I was having severe mood swings and that eventually lead to also getting a diagnosis of Bipolar.

Recently my phd said that plaquenil can induce mental disorders, but once it is activated its here to stay. Shocked

I would never have taken that med if I for once thought it could lead to THIS. I can deal with the schleroderma much easier than dealing with Bipolar, I am just a mess now that I have found this out.

Is anyone taking Plaquenil?

Just started Plaquenil
Yes, Severe moods swings just in the last few weeks, been taking it for about 6 weeks now. Thank goodness I googled Palquenil and mood swings. I'm going to stop taking it immediately. My doc won't like it though. Too bad.

Yes stop plaquenil and don't look back
Since I posted this thread in Feb. I have been off of Plaquenil and have never felt better. That drug messed my life up for almost 2 years. The Drs didnt know that this was a potential side effect to this drug and neither did I. It almost brought me to suicide. I also found out that due to the strength of this drug Dr.s are supposed to try 2 different meds before perscribing it. Please pass the word on the side effects to this medication, and feel better!

plaquenil
I am so glad I found this board. Was put on 400mg of plaquenil and after 1 month on it, was a mess. Extreme anxiety, cold sweaty hands, mood swings, and battled depression.
I stopped taking it immediately, and after a week, alot has calmed down, but still feel some anxiety and mild mood swings. Does anyone know, how long it takes to get the Plaquenil out of your system, after stopping it?

Thanks so much for this board.

Plaquenil
I have been on this stuff for 5 years for Lupus and it is making me crazy. My skin itches and burns, my head aches all the time, I am often dizzy and nauseous and also extremely irritable.
My new doctor told me this morning that it is extremely toxic and is sending me to a specialist to see about changing to another medication. She says it is known to induce psychosis in some patients.
