Hi all,
Of late, I have noticed very small bumps
on the shaft of my penis (for the past 2
months). After doing some research, I came
across Fordyce's spots and Genital warts.
I have seen few images of how the
infections look & they don't look as bad
as warts & would say the close resemblance
is to the spots. I have had a physical
relationship with my Girl Friend (GF) for
the past 3 years. I never got her
pregnant. We were also involved in oral
sex(without a condom). We did play without
a condom but that was just a minute or two
& after I felt that it's dangerous to
continue without a condom, I used to slip
one on & then I used to finish the act.
Now I had to leave town for work & after 3
months of staying away from her, I have
noticed this change(appearance of bumps)
on my penis shaft. I did not have any
physical relationship with any other woman
over here. I am really worried. When I got
together with my GF, we exchanged HIV/AIDS
health reports & we both were negative. I
had physical relationship only with her.
She also had 2 kids with 2 other men
previously and the kids are living with
their fathers. I believed her so much &
only after seeing the reports, our
physical act got serious. I thought I am
good & safe with a clean woman.
I don't have any other problems like pain
in my genital area or irritation/emissions
etc. The spots/bumps are painless. One day
they appear less visible & the next day,
then appear more obvious. Can anyone
please suggest me some effective means to
get rid of the problem? If not, can anyone
please suggest me a doctor in this area
who can help me? Should I see a
Dermatologist or Urologist? I don%u2019t
have a physician as I am new to this
place. What would be a reasonable charge
for such kind of a treatment if I am
tested positive for the same? And how much
time would it take for the cure? What do
you call a doctor who treats a condition
like Genital warts or Fordyce spots in
men? Please tell me so that even I can try
to get some help. How can I make sure that
the doctor knows what he is doing & not
taking me for a ride just as some others.
I have read in the forums that the
treatment that the doctor offered to get
rid of the problem did not work, as the
doctor diagnosed the problem wrongly. No
offense to anyone or any doctors, but
those doctors clearly did not tell that
they could not be confident about what it
was & offered another treatment when it
was something else. So I want to be away
from that kind of stuff. Again, please
forgive me if it sounds harsh. I am just
worried.
I even read that sometimes the warts
disappear automatically & don't come back.
Is this true? Do I wait & see? If yes, how
much time should I wait before the warts
can disappear? I cannot call them warts as
per the images that I have seen, but most
likely look like Fordyce Spots.
I appreciate an early reply in this
regard. Please kindly help me. I am
worried and this pain in my heart about
this unconfirmed situation is killing me.
Thank you very much in advance.

Warts can appear and disappear, this is
true. You can have the disease for years
and never know it. Also, I don't know what
can cause fordyce's spots appear. If they
look like the spots then why do you think
they are warts?
Like I said in my first PM to you, you
really need to go to a urologist and have
an STD panel done, get tested for
everything. He may even be able to tell
just by looking if you have one or not.

Called Urologist Posted: 02-24-08 15:39pm
Hi, I called a Urologist clinic to see how
they can help me & the nurse asked me
to consult a primary care physician (who
gives internal medicine) first & then
visit the specialist if needed &
advised by the doctor. She said she could
also arrange for meeting with the
specialist if i wanted to see him without
consulting primary care physician but that
would be just unnecessary if that was not
really needed. So I am thinking of
visiting Internal Medicine doctor first
& then the specialist if the doctor
asks me to. Please advise if my thought is
valid. Thank you.

I would do exactly what the nurse said to
do. I don't know how an Internal Medicine
doctor will be able to help you - that
sounds like another specialist. Go to a
General Practitioner first.

Hi,
I searched for General Practitioners in my
area & most of the results had
Internal Medicine specialists in the
results. Few other results included
Pediatrics, Family Practice. When I spoke
to the nurse, I asked her for Primary care
physician & she said that an Internal
Medicine doctor is same as the Primary
care physician. I even found one near to
my work place. But now I have this new
problem. I am expected to be in the office
from morning to evening. I do not want to
reveal my problem to my employer &
want to keep it confidential. But at the
same time, if I don't talk to him, I won't
be able to get out of the office with much
ease. Kindly suggest what I should tell to
my employer so that I can even visit the
doctor & even keep everything
confidential from him. Sorry, my mind is
heavy with the thoughts & can't even
think straight until I see the doctor
& get some good response from him.
Please let me know. Thank you.

Well okay. I didn't know they were the
same thing.
Just tell him you have a doctor's
appointment. He does not have the right to
pry and must by law allow you to go.

Oh..Didn't really know about that law..
Thanks a ton. Appreciate the same. I am
thinking of seeing the doctor tomorrow but
if they don't have an appointment for me,
I might have to get the earliest from
them.
Thanks a lot Eiri. I will let you know
once I get the things cleared from the
doctor.

Well that's the law in America anyway.
Other countries may not have those
freedoms and safeties for employees.
Good luck!!

Hi Eiri,
I consulted an Internal medicine doctor .
He said he was not sure if it was any
virus or a normal condition & asked me
to see a Urologist. He also said that the
doctor might treat me for HPV, if that's
what the diagnosis says. Or it might even
be a normal condition. So can you please
tell me what is the surest way to confirm
if it's a HPV. I pray it's not that &
it's just normal. But in the worst case
scenario, how can I make sure that the
doctor has not mistaken one for the other?
Also he mentioned laser treatment or cream
application if the urologist confirms it,
as my options. Which one would be more
beneficial & why?
Please help me put my mind at ease. Thank
you.

There is no test for a male to detect HPV.
They have to go off of symptoms alone.
You're better safe than sorry, getting
treated for HPV. If your urologist does
suspect HPV, you should get your
girlfriend to a gynecologist at the
soonest convenience and have her tested
for HPV as well. Your urologist has seen a
LOT of penises, so I'm confident he'll be
able to tell Fordyce's spots from HPV
lol.
I don't know about the different benefits
of laser or cream treatments; that's
something you'll have to ask your
urologist.

Good news & Bad news Posted: 02-28-08 22:07pm
Hi Eiri,
I visited the Urologist today. I explained
him the situation & he applied the
Venigar test. The good news is that the
bumps did not turn into silver color &
he concluded that it's definitely not HPV
/ Herpes /Warts. The bad news is that he
said that it can be "Molluseum
Contagiosum" infection that must have
occurred because of contact with the
genital area of my partner because she is
the only one I had sex with, for a couple
of years. He said that the bumps did look
like Molluseum Contagiosum but to make
sure that he's right, he said that he had
to take a sample out from the shaft of my
penis from the infected area. If the
result is found true, there is a
treatment. I can go for laser removal. He
also added that in some cases, if the
bumps are left alone, they might even
disappear on their own. I proposed to him
that I will wait for a couple of months
& see if they are decreasing in number
or fading away & depending on that, I
will either get a biopsy done for further
evaluation or see for any option. He did
not mention about any cream but when I
asked him if there's any, he said yes, but
also added that the cream might not work
as well as the laser treatment. I asked
him if they were "Fordyce Spots" & he
said that he does not know what they are.
So long story short, for now, he considers
the bumps as Molluseum Contagiosum. Now
how can I confirm this? Also does the
laser treatment leave any
marks/scars/residues if one goes for that?
Sorry, I was nervous at the hospital &
could not ask the doctor. Also now how can
I put this in front of my GF, now that I
know that I have surely got it from her.
She was with 2 men & had an encounter
with a third one & that was for my
knowledge. Please let me know. What can I
tell her? How do I ask her to get herself
checked & for what? I pray that the
bumps go away on their own.
Looking forward for your reply. Thank you.

You could have confirmed it by having the
test done, the biopsy. That's the only
way. I have no idea if the laser treatment
will leave scars, but if they don't go
away on their own don't you think some
marks on your penis is better than these
bumps?
And WHY did you have to get it from her?
Couldn't YOU have developed it on your
own? Yes, you could have. I HATE how men
ALWAYS blame their girlfriend!!!
Tell her you have this infection and
advise her to get checked. Don't accuse
her of anything. Just plain out say "The
doctor says I have molluseum contagiosum.
It's contagious, so you should get
yourself checked out too."

I could have agreed to having developed on
my own & it's no personal satisfaction
of mine to blame her for that. It's not
going to do me any good either. I was a
virgin till I met her & the place
where I come from, is free from this type
of sickness & I never had a problem
like this before. Only after being with
her after couple of years, I saw this. She
revealed to me later on when we got into a
relation ship that she had a sexual
encounter with a guy. Now very recently
she confessed to me that my absence was
troubling her & that she made out with
a guy. I have been only with her. Also
according to the doctor's diagnosis, I
must have got it from her because she was
my only sex partner. Do you still think I
have no reason to think so?
To be honest, I am kind of scared of the
biopsy, another matter being the fact that
my family is not here to take care of me.
I can't even discuss this with friends
because I cannot expect it to be
confidential. I feel like I am caught up
in a trap. I will talk to her just like
you said & try to get her to check
herself & let me know. I was planning
to get the biopsy done basing on her
reply. Iam confused, scared & hurt.
Please guide me. Thank you.

I'm in America which is pretty much full
of STD's, and I have never heard of
Molluseum Contagiosum. I'm saying, if it's
an infection caused by a common bacteria,
you could have given it to yourself. I
know nothing about this disease, however.
You won't need family care for a simple
little biopsy. I can understand having
them for emotional support, but
physically, the biopsy will be pretty much
nothing.
And honestly? Live with it. STD's happen.
She didn't purposely catch it and she
didn't purposely give it to you. People
cheat; that happens too. If you've
forgiven her then stick to it; an STD
shouldn't change how much you love her.
Plus it sounds like it's very easy to
cure.

I just got off the phone with her &
she would not believe me firstly. I had to
tell her in a detailed manner & she
then agreed to get the check done. But she
did not look much inclined towards getting
checked. Instead she was asking me if any
of my room mates used my bed to sleep. It
was her & me who were sleeping
together naked & not me & my
friends.
I am considering to get the biopsy done
but I am worried about the procedure. Does
it bleed during that? And will I need
anyone to help me out? Will I be able to
walk properly after that & walk my way
to work just like everyday? Will there be
any pain or discomfort when urinating if I
get it done?
I am still worried. Please advise. Thank
you.

See? She is accusing YOU just like you are
accusing HER.
You may bleed during a biopsy but it
wouldn't be a ton. You should be able to
walk just fine. Only if you were put
under general anesthesia would you need
someone to drive you home. Again, these
are all questions you need to ask the
doctor in order to get the true answer.
He's not going to be chopping off huge
chunks of your penis here.

Finally she agreed to get a full test done
on Monday. It seems she spoke to her
friend's mom who is a doctor & it
seems she said that I could have picked it
up from anywhere as it is contagious. The
only way to make sure about this is
through her reports. If she has it too,
then I will know for sure who did
something wrong. At this point of time, I
just want to get through this problem in
the safest way.
Do you have any idea of the laser
treatment? Can you please throw some light
on this? I tried speaking to the doctor
but he's unavailable & one of the
girls from the doctor's office would call
me on Monday to set up an appointment for
biopsy. Please let me know.

Why? Why did SHE have to give it to YOU?
Doesn't it occur to you that YOU could
have caught it somewhere and given it to
HER? You don't know for sure who did what.
I'm glad she's getting tested. I realise
that yes, you have reasons to suspect she
cheated on you, but again, if you're over
it then you're over it. Nobody wants to
think that it is THEIR fault, but in this
case, it could be your fault!
I have NO idea what this laser treatment
is. I could look up information on the
internet, but you can do that too.

I searched for Molluseum Contagiosum in
Google.
First result:
"As to where people get it, most of time,
who knows? It's like asking where you
catch a cold from.
If you leave mollusca alone, they go away
by themselves, but it takes an average of
9 months. Aldara may help, so if you have
some, apply it 3 times a week, but stop if
it gets irritated."
Also noted on that site is that Molluseum
can appear ANYWHERE on the body. It is NOT
an STD in that sense, because a towel or
skin-to-skin contact can spread it.
From Wikipedia:
"Pulsed dye laser therapy for molluscum
contagiosum may be the treatment of choice
for multiple lesions in a cooperative
patient (Dermatologic Surgery, 1998). The
use of pulsed dye laser for the treatment
of MC has been documented with excellent
results. The therapy was well tolerated,
without scars or pigment anomalies. The
lesions resolved without scarring at 2
weeks. Studies show 96%–99% of the
lesions resolved with one
treatment.[14][15] The pulsed dye laser is
quick and efficient, but its expense makes
it less cost effective than other options.
Also, not all dermatology offices have
this 585nm laser. It is important to
remember that removal of the visible bumps
does not cure the disease. The virus is in
the skin and new bumps often appear over
the course of a year until the body mounts
an effective immune response to the virus.
Thus any surgical treatment may require it
to be repeated each time new crops of
lesions appear."
Hi, Thanks a lot for the info. What I
thought of doing, is that get a biopsy
done & if the same virus is confirmed,
then I thought of waiting for few months
& see if it will go away on it's own.
The urologist said he would treat it with
laser if that's the case. So since I
noticed it from Jan 2008, if it does not
resolve till year end, then I will get the
laser treatment done at the end of the
year. Do you think my plan is advisable?
Does it make sense?
Also hopefully her reports will throw some
light on the issue. Please advise. Thank
you.
