Funny You Should Mention That
Posted: 05-08-04 08:45am

I've always had a strong sense of smell, my family makes fun of me because of it. When I was pregnant it was even worse. In fact, if you've got the time, i've got a funny little story to tell about it.

We were renting a small apartment in hawaii. I kept a clean house which wasn't hard because that apartment was so small. The apartments were also kind of old and so the plumbing wasn't the newest. The tiles in the bathroom needed to be replaced, but I did my best to keep that bathroom spotless and sanitized. When I was pregnant, I noticed that there was a urine smell in that bathroom that I could not get rid of. I decided it was urine seeped under the tile from previous sloppy tenants or leaky pipes whatever. So, I called the manager and complained that my toilet must be leaking. They sent a plumber. He came and checked it out and said there were no leaks. I said, "can't you smell that?! It stinks! There must be a leak" he said, "no, I don't smell anything. And I can assure you there's no leak." I complained to my husband and he said he couldn't smell anything either. So, I had to suffer with the smell of urine in that bathroom for the rest of my pregnancy. Once I delivered my son, it seemed the smell finally went away.

But my sense of smell remains pretty keen. I always smell stuff before anyone else does. I just wish my eye sight and my hearing were as acute.

I Go Through the Same Thing

Oh man I go through the same thing. I can smell every dang thing in this house when everyone else smells nothing. Do you have lupus too? If I get a really bad small it can cause it to flair.

I don't know if I have lupus yet. I have something. I just don't have a diagnosis. I'm in the process of finding out what it is. I don't think a smell has ever kicked off a flair for me, but then again I wasn't really paying attention. Things that seem to do it are sickness (like colds, viruses, weather changes, and my monthly period--probably the worst thing right now doing me in).

Perfume

I've always had a very strong sense of smell and taste. I can smell paint from very far away. Strong smells like perfumes will give me a headache. Everything I buy has to be fragrance free.

Here's a good web page about the health risks of perfumes.

Click on the link below and then click on "health risks of perfume and other products containing fragrance" further down the page.

for some reason this forum keeps trying to capitalize the links which is screwing them up.

Strong Sense of Small

Hi shawna,

i have the same problem...I can smell my horse a mile away. I guess it's the only side effect I don't mind with having lupus and epilepsy!
