I am new to this board - I will try and say my story as short as possible.
My mum is 66 years old and since summer she has been suffering from abdominal pain, and constipation. Towards October she started noticing some blood on the tissue after she wipes after have a bowel movement. then she started complaining of feeling the need to move her bowels but after lots of straining, she only passes a little stool. she also started getting a mild fever once a week which will only last for a few hours and as is always controlled with paracetamol. she had a ct scan done and an ultrasound and the bowels seemed ok but her uterus seemed very bulky. She knew she had a bulky uterus and was being monitered by her gynae for it. the docs suspected that her uterus was pressing on her bowels and causing an inflamation. she has had a barium enema and sigmoidoscopy but they were not perfomed properly cause the liquid from the barium enema kept on seeping out and during the sigmoidoscopy she started bleeding and a stricture was found. During the sigmoidoscopy 5 biopsies were taken which came out negative for cancer. they also performed some kind of blood test for cancer cells which came back negative for cancer too. her chest xray is clear too and her hemoglobin is 11.6. she seems fine except for when she has the tummy pain and shivers and chills from the fever. she has now spoken to the surgeon who will be operating her on the 3 march. her operation will be to remove whatever is causing the obstruction. we are scared as the surgeon told her that even though her cancer results were negative, there might still be cancer in her bowels. Did anyone ever experience this, I would have imagined with 5 biopsies, some cancer cells would have been found if there was any. she might still need to have her hysterectomy but first they are going to operate on her bowels. did any one ever have a large fibroid which was causing this obstruction on the bowels? thanks for any reply.

I agree that surgery must be performed, because there are clinical study reports of a false-negative endoscopic-directed biopsies.
Age greater than 50 years and unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms of more than 2 weeks' duration, are associated with increased risk for colon cancer.
What was your mum's last PAP smear result?
Any change in bowel habits is also a warning sign of gynecologic cancer.

thanks for your reply. her annual pap smears are always normal. so you think that she could have got a false negative result on all 5 biopsies? plus the blood test to detect cancer cells came beck negative too. i just hope it's not cancer, she's been through a loss of a child, breast cancer, acoustic neuroma and surgery for tyroid gland too.
