I have had problems for the past couple of years with severe pain in my right lower back. The pain is normally at least a 9 on a scale of 1-10 and it feels like someone is stabbing me in the back and twisting the knife. the pain sometimes radiates down toward my right leg, but not quite to my leg. Heat helps is, as does curling up into a tiny ball as tight as I can, but only for a short time. It keeps me up at night and often brings me to tears it is so bad. High doses of IB Profen help for short periods of time as well. The only time that I ever experience this problem, however, is during my period. It doesn't happen every month. It will happen for 3 or 4 months and then not for a while. Or sometimes it will go every other month and then cease for a few months. Does anyone have any ideas of what this could be?

Have you ever had a kidney stone or heard of renal colic?

Are your periods very heavy?

That's how I started, with pain in my left flank that would radiate into my back. Have you seen a Dr. What did they say? Yes, it could be colic,or stones, or, like me, an obstruction. I don't want to worry you, but a visit to a dr. could rule this out and if there is a problem they could correct it. My pain was a 9 too, and it wasn't all the time. I waited 10 years before I was diagnosed. Too long. If you have any questions let me know. Good luck.
