Q: I NEED Health Insurance!
asked by: Vivac on February 19th, 2008

I have been working at my job for 1 whole year and from the day I started my boss has been promising us health insurance but nothing has been done about it. At first it was fine because I was under 25 and still covered on my parents plan but once 25 hit I lost it all and started having to pull money from my own pocket to pay for my medical cost. When I asked the office manager about insurance she said the business just can't afford it right now but they are working on it...Thats the same answer anouther co-worker said she has heard for the past 6 years. Rolling Eyes

In the past month I've spent over $1500 in medical bills because I don't have insurance. I applied for Medicaid but was denied because my income is just above the poverty line for a single woman. I only make $600/month working full time. My bills are starting to add up to more then I make in a month. I love my job but I may be forced to quit and find something new or pick up a night job so I can afford to live. Most privet health insurance plans I've looked into are too costly to even consider with my income. I have never had a problem with money until I lost my insurance. I've always been very careful how I save and spend my money since I have been in college for 7 years and just finished my degrees this past December. I only fear I may fall into the debt trap if I don't find an affordable insurance soon!

I have some health issued I would like to take care of before they become worse but I have pulled together everything I got and still don't know how to go about taking care of my basic medical needs.

Any suggestions?

find a local agent?
depending on where you live there may be special programs available just for your situation. In Northern Nevada, we have a plan that is VERY inexpensive as long as you don't make more than 120% of the poverty level and you don't have to be medically underwritten. Otherwise, you might just try for a high deductible individual plan with a Heath Savings Account so that all the expenses you are paying out of your pocket will at least be tax deductible, and you will receive a discount on in-network providers, plus protect yourself from a major financial problem.

Health insurance
Get another job. The offer above looks great, but you have health issues you are trying to get cleared up. You will not be approved by underwriting to obtain a health insurance on your own because you have to disclose your issues. Individual policies are for healthy people. If you have pre-ex, you will either have your pre-ex excluded or they will deny you completely. If you lie on your application, get treated, and they file the claim, it will be denied, the policy will be canceled and you will be in worse shape than you are now.

Get a real job. The one you have speaks of no promise for the future or for offering insurance. Small employers cannot afford to insure you. If they do get a policy, it probably won't have the best of benefits anyway because the cheaper the policy, the less it covers.

Hope this helps
