Hi there. I started having severe panic attacks about 25 years ago. The first one happened on the sf bay bridge. I haven't been over a bridge since. Over the years things have gotten worse. I now only drive surface streets. I've been to countless doctors, psychiatrists, neurologists, etc. I now have no insurance. My last doctor prescribed a small amount (10 tabs, .25 mg) of alprazolam for a trip I was taking many years ago. The stuff was like magic. It really helped. Since then she switched me to zoloft which also helped quite a bit, but the sexual side effects caused me to put an end to that after about a year.

I also have trouble sleeping through the night. I noticed that a half a tab of the xanax gave me a very restful nights sleep with no morning hangover.

Here's the problem.... Xanax helped me so well in the sleeping and anxiety department. I've got an extremely un-additive personality. But she will not prescribe these for me again. Instead we go through this list of various other drugs for my sleeping. None of which work at all or have horrible side effects (semi-painful erection all night... Not as wonderful as it may seem).

About a year and a half ago I bought 30 2mg tabs of alprazolam on the web. I've been cutting the tabs in 1/8's or 1/4's and using them for the occasional time where i've had a series of bad nights and had to have a good nights sleep. These 30 tabs have lasted all this time. I have 1.5 tabs left and I don't want to buy online. For one thing they are about 8 times the price, and there are too many shady sites on the market now. I can no longer find the company on the label of my bottle. Probably shut down...

Any words of wisdom out there?

I understand your doctors wishes for you not to be on xanax. It is highly addictive and alot of people have a hard time coming off of it if they ever do. I also can understand your wishes in wanting to take it. I have had many experiences with a variety of meds and that one was a nice one. I do understand that the ssri's have many side effects but there are about 20 different ones you could try. I would want to encourage you to find a doctor who will help you witfinding something that would help you. You should not have to suffer. My doctor once told me xanax was the heroine of all aniety medications. Unfortunately you may have a hard time finding something now, but I would still try. So find a new doc!! Also I am on paxil for the panic and anxiety. I have only been on it for two weeks so I am still unsure how this on will do.

You may want to look into getting involved in cognitive behavioral therapy (cbt), in addition to whatever med you end up getting as it will teach you the tools to help yourself and eventually got me off all meds :d

good luck!

Benzo's...
You people are whack..Benzo drugs are totally safe for your body and have no adverse reactions to any major systems of the body. If benzo's work great..it's a miracle and u should stick with it. As for ssri's, there is so many and there all going to give you a laundry list of side effects as well as being hard on your liver. Who care if benzo's are addictive if they work for you and are otherwise harmless, most other drugs don't work well for anyone! And by the way panic attacks can be very biological in their nature cognitive therapy alone is not the answer.
go with a low dose benzo!
