I have had a funny feeling in my si joint and slight pain down on the left side of my butt and leg for 10 months now. also i have been having pain only down the left side of my penis. My mri shows a herniated disc only at l4 l5 so the doctor doesn't think this is causing the groin/penis pain. I believe these to be related tho because i can stretch and position myself in certain ways that makes the pain better or worse. any ideas? the doctor seems to think i would have to have an s1 issue for the penis/groin pain but something else seems to be causing it. everyone is clueless. I just know somehome it is related to my back. i really need some advice.

Hello Healthnut,

You are doing the right thing, and that is to "listen" to your body.

I'm glad you have seen a doctor about this and had an MRI. HOWEVER, your doc doesn't seem to be interested/helping you.

Next step - Healthnut, look for the best neurologist/spinal surgeon that you can find in your area. Talk to those you know. Find out which spine specialist they thought highly of and and the ones they did not like. If there is a professional sports team in your area, call their office and find out the name of the spinal specialist that they use for their players.

Then call the doctor that is at the top of your list and make an appointment. Take your MRIs along with you when you meet with the doctor. Next, call the 2nd neurologist/spinal surgeon on your list and make an appointment to see that doctor too. Second and third opinions are always a good idea in my opinion.

I am not a doctor, but when you mentioned about the pain going down your left side of yhour butt and your leg, that sounds to me like a pinched nerve, and that issue needs attention without delay. And the pain in your penis also needs attention. Just as you suspect both pains may be related. That does not necessarily mean surgery. I had that same pain going down my leg and my pain management doctor has taken care of the problem.

I wish you the best, and DO see a neurologist/spinal surgeon or two.

It sounds like your problems might be related to an SI joint dysfunction going on. A really good chiroprater who uses osteopathic techniques or an osteopathic physician can help you with this. Some physical therapists also have this training. Best of luck!

In 63% of cases with L4-L5 disc herniation and radiculopathy, pain was felt in the S1 dermatome. Everyone is wired differently. You could be impinging on nerve roots as the pass upward through the spinal cord.

Hello Healthnut,

Bplturner has provided you with a good explanation as to the probable cause of your pain. And that Healthnut, no chiro is going to be able to address (with due respect to Sillyakchick).
