I'm a recovered addict & alcoholic. If I reveal my past to a doctor, they won't prescribe adequate pain meds when they're needed. Anyone else deal with this? (Guess I was naive to reveal my history.)

OTC pain meds do NOTHING for me. Is this because of my history? Anyone else have this problem? Confused

Thanks for any info.

What kind of pain do you experience? I tore my back up last year and used Flexiral (sp) for the pain. Its a muscle relaxer but its non-narcotic. It really helped the pain. There are so many other medications that arent narcotic that you could try. Have you talked to your doctor about trying non-narcotic medis?

But back to your original ? Yes I think that once you reveal that information doctors and all kinds of people tend to judge you. Its in your medical records with this Doctor so he probably wont change his mind. I have read from your other posts that you have been sober for a long time. I dont think that all of a sudden you are going to dump it all away. So I suggest maybe finding another doctor that specializes in your condition. Otherwise you will get the prejudice from this other doctor. I hope this helps. Good luck and its ok to releive pain.....hope it works out for you

You do have a valid point. Having an addiction problem does come back to haunt you. But, I feel the if you are honest with you doctor, he will trust you more. If you hold back, I think the consiquenses might be higher then if you did tell him.
I say tell the truth and tell him how long you have been clean and sober, meetings, support groups, family intervention etc. It will help he have some trust in you.
Nevertheless, this is going to be a hard nut to crack. You have to understand that you do stand a big chance of not getting a narcotic pain med from anywhere. Doc's are already very timid about giving them out much less to someone who has an addiction problem. To easy to get back into trouble again.

I learned to not reveal my ex problem, because I have severe Fibromyalgia and struggled to get pain meds. Most doctors look differently at you if you tell them. Your choice!

I'm with you. Next week I see a neurologist for the first time and I'm not putting it on the forms.

There are, but not potent if you take it for severe pain. If you take the strong pain killers for about 10 days, it'll be fine. But then you should stop or you shall go down the spiral.

Thanks. All of you have given me some good advice! Esp. about the 10-day period.
