Q: Insomnia...

Howdy, i'm 16 and i'm a junior in high school. I find that since I can remember i've always had problems sleeping, I can never get to sleep when I want to. I've tried different diets, quitting caffienated drinks, and exercizing daily. But nothing seems to work other than doing so much physical activity that I can barely move. My lack of sleep is starting to affect school, i'm getting a minimum amount of required sleep, and even that isn't enough. On weekdays I am forced awake a 6 am to get ready for school and am out the door to school by 7:30. I go to bed usually at 8-9 pm, leaving plenty of sleep time, but I never get to sleep until about 12-3 in the morning. On weekends I sleep to noon, or past noon and never wake refreshed, only tired. Is there anyone who can give me advice?

I kind of have the same problem. Just exercise more during the day and don't go to bed as early. Also try reading a book. If you find it hard to sleep reading a "good" book just find one of the most boring books you can find and just start skimming. You'll be out in no time.

How are your pillows? Are they comfortable, and your bed is that comfortable also? Where do you sleep? Do you have your own room? It is important. We all want to feel special and in the evening, sometimes it is not that way. The bedroom is a special warm place to be. Do you use your bedroom just for sleeping or do you use it for other activities? Do you have a clock in your room, if so take it out or turn it around. This way you wont be looking at it during the night. These are distractions. I change my pillows every three months, I find that my head is uncomfortable. I wont listen to music, for me it is to stimulating and it keeps me up. I hope these suggestions help, good luck

Routine
Try to go to bed at the same time each night and get up same time every morning.Ie...Weekends...Try not to sleep most of the day as this will cofuse your body and muck you up for the rest of the week.
Small peace of advice but it may be related to your sleeping till late at weekends?

Hello

there are some self help tips which you can find helpful. They are as follows:

try to go to sleep at the same time each night and get up at the same time each morning.
Try not to take naps during the day because naps may make you less sleepy at night.
Make your sleeping place comfortable. Be sure that it is dark, quiet, and not too warm or too cold.
Don't eat a heavy meal late in the day. A light snack before bedtime, however, may help you sleep.
If you have trouble lying awake worrying about things, try making a to-do list before you go to bed. This may help you to relieve of those worries for whole night.

I hope you will find them helpful!!

Falling Asleep
I have two thoughts about falling asleep, and I realize that falling asleep happens differently for different people.

The first idea has already been mentioned and that is to start reading in bed. Since you are in school, I would suggest reading your school books. One of two things will happen... Either you will fall asleep, or if you don't, you will be one of the best read students in school and should be able to ace all of your tests. You might actually get out of school having learned something.

I though of the second idea after seeing something at a friends house. They recently had a pretty cool (i'm dating myself) mural painted on their ceiling. It is a mural that is invisible in light and is painted with glow in the dark paint. It is a mural of the night sky and they lie in bed and look up into a real looking night sky as they fall asleep. They say that it is great. I am going to have one painted for my daughter who has a hard time falling asleep too, and one for myself. I would check out their site and maybe see if they have someone in your area who you could call. If they don't have someone there, they might be able to find someone for you.

if neither one of those suggestions works for you, then I don't know what to suggest. I never go to bed early, but if I did I would fall asleep pretty fast with a book, even a good one.

Good luck!
