First of all you have to be sure if the pain originates from the kidneys or from the loin muscles or from the spinal nerves.
Pain that originates from a kidney is usually severe, sharp and intermittent. It can be due to a kidney stone or kidney infection. This type of pain is usually accompanied with frequent urges to urinate and painful urination. In cases of infection, a high temperature and fever can be also present. Urine can be affected in the case of a kidney infection.
Straight muscle pain (myalgia) is usually dull but constant. The intensity of myalgia can vary. Nerve pain (neuralgia) , on the other hand, is severe and sharp like an electric shock. Nerve and muscle pains can be provoked by certain body movements.
Finally, urine laboratory analyses and an ultrasound scan can confirm or exclude possible kidney disorder. You can consult your GP and then an internal medicine specialist later, if necessary.
