My mind's eye is stuck in the past Posted: 02-10-08 23:32pm
It kind of weird, there are days that I
will be doing normal things, but my mind
will be stuck in some place in the past.
Most times it starts at night, I will be
studying or playing video games and
suddenly my mind's eye is somewhere else.
When I get these moments, my mind doesn't
seem to stray from that area or place
until i go to bed that night. It seems to
happen when I'm anxious or nervous about
something. It's never anything but places
that I have been to but strangely some of
the places i haven't been to in more than
20 years. It could be an overactive mind
of remembering places ive been. Like I can
remember places I have been sometimes a
single time or a few times or like in
school, places I saw everyday very well,
very vividly. It doesn't keep me from
doing what I need to do in life
neccessarily but its very surreal. I
wonder if this is some kind of OCD
symptom, but even when I was 15 i remember
having this.
Nothing traumatic happened in these places
but i just remember where all the things
were at the time.
Thanks.

It does sound like OCD, doesn't it? It's
a bit like getting an annoying song in
your head that won't go away, only worse I
suppose. I. You say you remember where
everything was at the time, as though that
were an important factor - and perhaps it
is for you! I think it is your mind's way
of coping with stress and trying to impose
some sort of order and I can't see much
wrong with that! I find myself counting
subconsciously when I get stressed - but
the difference between this and true OCD
is that I don't NEED to do it, it just
creeps up on me gradually and I can stop
it whenever I want - I just find it
comforting to do it. Do you find your
'mind's eye' experiences are easy to stop,
or do you feel compelled to carry on with
it? If you feel it is taking over your
life in any way then yes, it might be a
cause for concern but it doesn't sound
like that to me.
