Q: Dehydration cause miscarriage ?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 9th, 2008
I am 12 weeks pregnant and have just been hit with a terrible bought of food poisoning (at least that what I assume it was). I experienced severe vomiting and diarrhea for about 12 hours and can still barely eat anything due to nausea (48 hours on). I lost 4 lbs during the first 24 hours. I am very concerned for the well being of my baby. Are there any particular signs I should be watching out for? Is there any reason for me to visit a doctor?

Severe dehydration can provoke a miscarriage given a certain level of severity of diarrhea and vomiting, or more precisely how many times a women goes into the toilet. If diarrhea is severe and accompanied by vomiting it can become worse because liquids and salts can’t be supplied naturally. In such cases you may need to be treated with intra venous infusions. Microbiological examination of the stool can be performed to identify the possible infective agent. You can contact your GP and then an infectologist to follow up, if necessary.
