Q: Muscle extension injury
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 8th, 2008
Recently after shoveling away more than a foot of snow, I have been having a slight pulled feeling in lower left abdomen. Not really pain, but more like a bothersome dull ache. It started right after coming inside and warming up from more than an hour of shoveling. I was trying to take it as easy as possible, but with the snow we got, it was just not easy to do. I am wondering if I pulled something, I have not had any other symptoms from this, it just hurts a bit to laugh hard. Bending over does not hurt and also have has no problems with eating, sickness, nauseas, etc. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank You

According to your description of a “slight pulled feeling in lower left abdomen” after shovelling some weight without eating problems, sickness, nauseas, etc it seems that you could be experiencing some type of muscle extension of the abdominal muscle (s). Muscle extension is treated with rest and mild painkillers if you can’t stand the pain. A warm bath is also very useful. If muscle rupture has occurred, pain will be more severe and recovery much longer. You can consult your GP about this for more advice and to seek a preliminary diagnosis.
