Q: unprotected oral sex & HIV infection
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 8th, 2008
I received unprotected oral sex (for a very short time as I did not expect him to do it and thought better of it and stopped it) from a male who hiv status is unknown. two days later I noticed two pencil tip size ? sores/cuts on my penis. I would not have noticed them if I was not looking. They scabbed over the next day and disappeared shortly after. I do not know if they were there when this situation took place. I have had herpes outbreaks and I do not think this was one. and I have not had an outbreak for a long time now. What is my risk of HIV infection and should I get tested? All the information I have seen on the internet in reguards to oral sex is confusing

HIV is present in the blood and sperm in great quantities but in very small amounts in the saliva. This means that you must have cuts or open sores on your penis and your partner must have some cuts or open sores in or around his mouth. Simply, the blood from both wounds must be in contact in order to transmit the virus. Additionally, fresh herpes lesions can act as mucosal doors for HIV entrance. HIV can’t pass through cured cuts or herpes lesions. Since you don’t know your partner's HIV status or whether or not he had cuts present in his mouth ... you can do HIV-test now and in 3 months, you can request the test again.
