i started taking the pill about 11 days ago and i had unprotected sex for the first time today. am i protected by the pill by now if i started it the first day of my period?

yes, if you started it during your period, you were protected immediately. If you started it at a time that wasn't during your period, you were protected after seven days.

You are definitely protected by now. As long as you have remembered to take your pill every day at approximately the same time, you have nothing to worry about.
