Pain Meds.
Posted: 02-07-08 14:32pm

So, I got prescribed Tylox. It's a VERRRRY potent mixture of tylenol and codine. My GOD!

I don't like percosets or darvosets..so my Doc gave me these.

They work GREAT for the cramping & pain, but they make me soooooooooo sleepy!! I mean An hour after I take it, I'm ducking off!!

I don't like taking them JUST for that reason. I mean, it's sooo annoying. It makes me wish I'd asked for the darvocets instead...

I don't take them and I'll be in pain. But it's like I'd rather be in pain than falling asleep or not having the energy to deal with Nya. And right now, she needs ALL my attention for this breastfeeding.

Mreh, just thought I'd share...

What kind of pain were you prescribed Tylox for?

Sarah, tell your doctor about the sleepiness. There are lots of pain meds to choose from, so he could try something else.

Most pain meds, unfortunately have this effect to some extent.

"The word "narcotic" comes from the Greek word "narkos", meaning sleep. Therefore, "narcotics" are drugs that induce sleep."

Think of the word "narcolepsy", the affliction where people fall asleep at inappropriate times.

a quick search brought up this-

Tylox has not been rated by the AAP, Hale rates it L3 (moderately safe). Hale says you should watch for infant sedation. The sedative quality could indirectly cause jaundice by causing the baby not to eat enough.

maybe you should ask for Toradol instead.

Tylox is oxycodone and tylenol. I hope that you aren't in severe pain to have been prescribed these after birth - and to have been still taking them for a week! Yikes.

Get some rest. It sounds like you need it. Those are some heavy duty drugs.

I'm sure her doctor did a risk/benefit analysis before he prescribed it. Still, it doesn't hurt to make sure it's ok.

then she must be in some serious pain considering there are safer drugs out there.

toradol is a level 2 drug that is safe for breastfeeding.

I didn't know that info!

He told me he was going to give me darvocet. But after voicing my dislike of that drug, he changed it to tylox.

I asked him if it was safe for breastfeeding and he said "definately. I've lowered your dose to 1 every 4-6 hours, as opposed to 2 every 4hours. But you can take them as you need them, if you need them."

I'm def not in any serious pain. Being that I didn't tear or have a cut, my only pain was cramping. The nurses were always asking if I needed something and I 75% of the time, refused.

I've taken 2, in 48 hours...I'm at the point where I really don't need them. And I took them because I was doing A LOT. We had to go to the hospital for her blood tests. And those outtings lasted no less than 2/3 hours of standing/walking...NOT fun!

Thanks again for the info ladies!! I'm always glad that I post cuz I learn something EVERY time!!
