Q: Antibiotics for tonsillitis
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 7th, 2008
Hey. I was wondering, I've been put on a week on a mix of antibiotics for tonsillitis; in your experience, how long does it take until the white spots/pus on the tonsils are removed? Also, how long will it take until one finds a noticeble difference in how they feel?

I'm on my 4th day (morning) and I have yet to see any major improvements. I started them Monday afternoon, on Wednesday I still felt the same so I rang my doctor who put me on a week of penisillin in addition to the distaclor. What can I expect?

Cheers.

Infectious Diseases Answer A3634
Acute pus tonsillitis is usually provoked by the bacterium Streptococcus pyogenes. Tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus is usually treated over 10 days with penicillin. Although you can feel an improvement in the symptoms within about 4-5 days, 10 days treatment is the time required for eradicating the Streptococci bacteria completely. If tonsillitis is caused by another bacterium that is equally sensitive to the antibiotics, you can expect an even faster recovery.
