Hi carifairy!

I have been lurking around the forums for a while now. However, I just read a reply you posted to someone about birth control. You mention the Mirena IUD. Do you have this and do you have any thoughts on it as far as side affects? I just canceled an appointment for the IUD because I got scared of everything that I read about gaining weight.

I have an uderactive thyroid which i am being treated for and have a some extra weight i am trying to take off and don't really want anything to add to it, and also I, too, suffer from depression and am currently on medication for that as well. Thank you in advance! Take Care!

Sorry I'm not Carifairy Smile

Have you looked into the paragard IUD? No hormones, so it wouldn't interfere with your thyroid, weight, or depression.

I had the mirena. I would recommend it to other women, but it did make me gain weight. I don't know how common it is, but it is a possibility.

And of course, you'll never know how anything will effect YOU until you try it!

Thanks Georgia59!

I did in fact look into the Paragard IUD. I really didn't like the heavy bleeding and cramps that are associated with it.

Yeah, I know everything is trial and error and not everything will work for everyone. UGH! Birth control is such a pain in the butt!!....LOL

Thanks so much Georgia59!

Extremely eHealthy
PARAGARD IUD only increases periods for women for the first 1-3 months, after that they return to normal.

I DID use a Mirena for 18 months, but switched to paragard because I had bleeding for ALL 18 months.

Mirena can cause some women to constantly bleed, it did to me.

I HAD a weight problem, I lost 90 pounds about 11 years ago.

MIRENA did not make me gain weight, or cause depression. BUT, I exercise 2 hours everyday, and never cheat on my diet.

ive had the mirena for a year now. and my appetite has increased TREMENDOUSLY! therefore, there was a lot weight gain. If i can control my eating habits and work out..i will loose weight. but that seems hard to do..because my cravings are so bad since ive been on this mirena. pre-mirena..ive always been able to control my cravings. i had the paraguard IUD..and i also had the heavy bleeding every month, bad cramps. and i always had a discharge. SO im just stuck in a rut! Keep the mirena? or go back to the paraguard? ugh! you're right Mainegirl..birth control is a pain in the butt!! i have 2 children, and i tried getting my tubes tied..but because of health issues i cant. Im thinking i should get a second opinion.
