Q: Erection problems & flaccid penis
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 6th, 2008
doc, i cannot get an erection when confronted with the possibility of sex. I often, however, get erections and random times in the day and in the mornings as well as when i masturbate. When i am in an intimate situation though my penis remains flaccid despite the fact that i am really turned on and really want to have sex. I am a virgin. I think of the most kinky fantasies to try get an erection but nothing seems to get it up. this has happened on 2 occassions now and it has started worrying me. on both occassions i was completely sober. its like my penis will not respond.

what should i do? am i impotent? is there any medication that'll help?
I am at a complete loss. its as tho my body wont listen to my head. your help will be greatly appreciated.

Erectile dysfunction, as it has been described in your case, typically manifest for young men. Impotency may be due to anxiety (psychogenic impotency) or inexperience and you may not need medications. It might help to promote relaxation and have greater faith in your sexual ability.

The erection of the penis is a complicated psycho-neuro-vascular reflex. Various types of psycho-emotional factors such as fear, shame, and/or anxiety can disturb the erectile process. You can’t expect to be an excellent lover after your first 2 sexual attempts or experiences. You might, however, try to find a partner who will be emotionally close to you, first, and then explore your relationship sexually. If the relationship with your girlfriend is set on a solid emotional foundation, she will probably be more tolerant of the situation and will have greater patience for any temporary erectile dysfunction.
