I have a BIG problem. I have lower back pain( like I have been stabbed) and it is causing a sharp shooting pain down my left leg. I can hardly walk. I have been prescribed Lortab 10 but they dont do anything! What could it be? I have an appointment with a neurosurgeon on Monday but I cant sleep or walk or do anything!!

Ash,
Almost sounds like a nerve problem to me. Might just have a lumbar vertibre setting on a nerve. That is usually what happens when the get compressed. Depending on what vertibre it is will decide what part of your body it will refer too. Like L-1 will refer and make you kidney's feel pain. If this is the case, sounds like it is a very low lumbar vertibre. I am no doctor, just some guess work on my part. You might have a pinched nerve due to a compressed low vertibre.

It's most likely a pinched nerve and pain meds dont work all the time. I had l5 s1 completely broken and poking into my nerve core, also sharp shooting pain down my right leg. I went to a spine specialist and the xrays showed the broken vertibre. I had a rod and 4 screws put in my back on Jan 14th of 08. For the first time in almost 2 years no back or leg pain. I would check with a spine doc and see what is the problem.

Pinched Nerve
I have to go see my neurologist again on Friday. I HOPE that he can do the steroid epideral if it is indeed a pinched nerve. I just started a new job and I am not 100%, to say the least and my job is in jeopardy! He didnt give me ANYTHING for pain! It just seems like he could have done something more! I dont have insurance either so I have to pay for office visits and that is really expensive. I am in a rut and dont know what to do. The doctors at the ER think that I am just a drug seeker, but I suppose in some weird sense I am because I NEED the pain pills just to be able to walk. I am walking with a cane and I am 35!!

You are in extreme pain, why would the doctors not give you anything for pain? That's awful

Pinched Nerve
I dont know why they wouldnt give me anything for pain. I have had to go to the ER 4 different times and they have given me Lortab and Flexeril, but neither seem to help. I dont have any insurance so the ER is quite expensive. I am at a loss on what to do! I just want the pain to go away, either through pain meds or surgery or whatever, it doesnt matter to me just as long as the pain goes away!!
