I have had mirena for 15 mths. After about 3 mths my periods completely stopped, and now all of the sudden I have started again. It is bright red blood just like a period. I even had the cramping. I know is IS normal to not have periods, but is it normal to go a year without one then suddenly start?

Why do I have heavy bleeding on Mirena after a year?
I do not have any pain and it is great, reliable birth control--HOWEVER, I have irregular, super heavy periods! I soak through super tampons every hour. Gush! It is always at bad times too- work, restaurants, etc. No warning. Embarrassing. I also get these HUGE blood clots that come out in the tub. Size of silver dollars. When I think it is finally over, I have sex- only to find out I have bled everywhere! My husband is sweet but I am grossed out. I have been on Mirena for almost a year now. I thought me periods were supposed to lighten up and disappear.

It was suggested that I have a Mirena put in after surgery for Endo. It started off ok, with little to no bleeding until about four months ago after sex. I now bleed all the time and have also ended up with Cysts in my right ovary - a side effect from the Mirena and not one that I was told about at the time. As a result of being presented to the Public health care system in servere pain from this 'new' development, I am now back in the Endo clinic discussing my options with Dr's as to the next stage. I only had the thing put in to try and help my periods after my Endo surgery, however the side effects, weight gain, tired, headaches and now constant bleeding are not worth it. I would rather have natural period pain than have this foreign object in my body. Having read this chatline, I will make an appointment to have this removed. This is not natural.

I have had the mirena in for about three months now, the first two months was nothing but spotting now this month I have been bleeding heavy. I was told by a christian doctor, who at this time I am not under their care, but she said that the Mirena is a post fertilization birth control. I believe this is why I have started bleeding so heavy. I will be calling my doctor to have this "abortion kit" removed.

I had mine on 29 Aug on my second day of the period. my period continued for one more day then stopped (i normally have 5 to 6 days period) i then had bleeding on 5 Sep for a few days and since then until today(5 Oct) i'm having a brownish sometimes reddish discharge that wouldn't stop.
i'm considering having it removed after reading these posts. after my first child i had an IUD and it was great for me.. but my GynOb told me that mirena is better and it causes less periods.now he's telling me it's normal to have unsteady periods for a few months, but i have the feeling it'll never stop and after reading this post i'll be removing it asap

I had mirena inserted on November 17th, 2010. I have been bleeding every since. The first week after it was inserted I was just spotting but on December 1st I begin bleeding heavily and I haven't stopped since. I'm having major cramps, mood swings and a lack of energy. I'm already anemic. Can someone please help me with this? I'm thinking about getting it removed because I don't want this to cause major problems.

I have had a my mirena for four years... Every so often 1-4 times per year I had pink spotting or brownish spotting (easily manage with a panty-liner. It seems as if when I am under extreme stress, these issues pop up. Since Thanksgiving, I have had what I would call a cyclical period twice, managed by a panty liner. However, after going for four years with almost no issues, this months 10 days of brownish discharge is scary. Does anyone know if this is typical toward the end of the mirena lifespan.

As for the person who pulled hers out... Please, nobody do that. I am a retired EMT and a perforated uterus is an emergency. You may very well perforate your uterus by pulling those strings. It is best to have the physician who inserted this, remove it.

I am using the mirena because I have only one ovary, am 49 and am very perimenapausal. BCPs almost killed me. I cannot comment on the sex issues. My husband is 65 and I have not had sex since the mirena was inserted. Please note that if you are of the perimenapausal age, the mirena is progesterone only and does not affect your normal hormone functioning, which at this age is all over the place. However, any changes in your cycles are always best reviewed by your physician's office. Make the call, it can bring peace of mind... which is priceless!

Mirena can be controlled
Like all of you I am also experiencing problems such as none stop bleed if not on and right back off again periods, brownish discharge, lack of energy and at first a little weight gain, tho I am too sure on that. I have had Mirena since Januray 2011 and the bleeding is very frustrating. However I am in training to do a bikini show which requires me to diet and exercise strict and that in itself is not easy on top of my Mirena troubles. In order to acheieve my goal I push myself to get up and do what I need to. I feel sluggish and low spirited at times I'm bleeding and cramping so training nowadays are always more on bad days that good ones but pushing through that helps. I don't believe anything is threatening yet in regards to the Mirena though it is headaching and if you feel like it is threatening you should simply talk to your doctor is not satisfied, toss the damn thing. Get it out first Smile I thought about tossing mine but it was hell leading up to get the damn thing in. You have your moods with Mirena but I think they're common if not okay but if you can't cope with it, toss! I'm giving my body 6 months and if I'm still bleeding none stop by then, I'm tossing this damn thing for real lol

Mirena brown discharge
I had my Mirena inserted this year Jan 2011 and experience every thing you guys are complaining(irregular bleeding, brown discharge, less energy) about and yes it feels good to know im not the only one.The issues are far better than having more kids.Ive bought myself iron vitamins to replace the blood loss.My husband and I have sex whether the brown stuff is there or not.Speak to your partner and find ways to work around them because its for the benifit of both of you .Im spending more on panty liners and its still cheaper than having a baby.Smile if you really worried speak to your doctor

I have had the mirena for about a year and a half now, and i still have spotting, When i had my second child i got it put in 6 weeks after, i then bleed for a total of 10 months straight. I figured i would give it a year, the constant bleeding stopped but i know spot all the time, i may go a week or two without, but then i get my period, right now i am on a almost 3 week long one. Its good to hear im not the only one with these problems. I want to get it out, but for some reason my insurance wont cover the removal so i have to pay 200 out of pocket. Yuck

I am in the exact same predicament as you. I delivered on Sept 28, 2010 and got the mirena six weeks later. I have the exact same issues as you. After six months of bleeding, I went to the doc and told him about it. He looked at my cervix and said it was (I quote) "beautifully pink" and not to be concerned. Here it is 19 months later and I'm still spotting here there, bleeding after sex, but occasional heavy months. Again, like you, my insurance won't cover the removal. $200 sounds worth it to me. Guess I'll go back to the depo shots.

Talk to your doctor. I had this happen for two months after insertion, and I finally called and said "I can't take it anymore". He said, "Why didn't you call sooner? There are tons of options to help with this" I was put on double doses of b.c. pill, the bleeding didn't stop, we did an ultrasound, found it was in the wrong spot due to my physical tilt of my cervix and uteris. He took it out and put the new one in, right away, with the use of the ultra sound and it is totally fine now. All you have to do is speak up. Don't just wait and complain!

Mirena is the worst thing I have ever encountered
I have had Mirena for about 6 months and I HATE IT! I used to have horrible cramping (stomach-turning camping) and I always could feel myself ovulating. I had a very complicated miscarriage and my OB/GYN pushed me to go on Mirena. She handed me pamphlets on a number of different birth controls (none for the pill because I am "young and will surely forget to take it"). I asked her questions about it at my next visit and she said "I told you to look at the pamphlets!" I asked her if there were risks, what I would feel like after I got it, etc.; she just sort of brushed those negatives off. Kickbacks? I suspect so...
I got it put in, bled... for 4 weeks, not to mention I got horrible cramps that felt like period, ovulation, and a tampon gone wrong all at the same time; I could barely walk. I asked the Doc. later if that was normal. Response "Oh, your body just has to get used to it for 3-6 months..." What?! That would have been nice to know earlier!
Now, I get random periods that last about 2 weeks, random cramping, soreness and uneasy feelings, not to mention some painful and inhibited sex (What is the point in birth control if it never allows you to have sex? Maybe that IS how it works...). As soon as I figure out what my insurance allows, I am getting Mirena removed and going on the pill.
I would NEVER advise ANYONE to get on Mirena.

I got the Mirena just 5 weeks ago, and , like you, wasn't warned about the possibility of non-stop bleeding and cramping prior to the procedure. I'm also being told to wait 3-6 months to see if it subsides ... they're saying that this is how 15% of women my age (age 43) react, and that it happens 50% of the time for women in their 20s. After doing some research, I've ordered Shepherd's Purse, which is supposed to help stop the bleeding. I also heard that taking extra Vitamin E can make a difference. As a back-up, I got a prescription for 3-weeks of low-dose estrogen which is supposed to help - but that would be a short-term fix.

My only remaining option if this doesn't work is a tubal ligation, as I can't stay on birth control pills (they've resulted in estrogen dominance, which is a very bad thing as it increases a woman's risk of cancer).

If you haven't had your IUD removed yet, I'd say give the Shepherd's Purse a try ... good luck!

It sounds like you should get a new doctor StephChi! Good gravy, no one will force you into any medical decision. I'm sure you had to sign an informed consent form agreeing that you understood what you were about to do. Find a new doctor. Speak up and stand up for yourself as a patient.
