My mother walks into the vets office and the secretary says "Are you here for a spay?" and my mother said "Yes, and a declaw.".
My mother tells me how the secretary was so upset and goes on to tell her that they cut off their knuckles and so on....
Then she looks at my mom with tears in her eyes and says "Are you sure you still want to go through with it?". With little hope in this lady's eyes, my mom said "YES!"

My mom wasn't trying to be cruel(she actually considered not going through with it after all she said), but her cat had been using her leg as a scratching post. This cat wasn't a vicious cat, but even with a couple of her own scratching post, my mother was one of many things getting a taste of Dory's nails.

My cat is also neutered & declawed.

you would develop a calis if that happened.
its just the tips. your so ridiculious lol
no it is an animal. they dont talk with me dont hug me, its fed, cleaned up after, played with and then goes on its own to sleep or whatever and comes to you when they want affection. it is just a cat and nothing more.
I guess that when a dog or cat get their balls cut off they get all the pain relief they need....i dont think so! but its not humane than declawing...OK ANIMAL ACTIVIST!
a vet can cry and make someone feel guilty all they want or an animal activist can preach to me all she wants, but when it comes TIME for the choice to be made, we make it. and i guess you did not read what my bf said, he WOULD NOT give any kind of money to a vet. so stop lecturing me. and read PROPERLY.

My cat is a Hunter. We got him at the kitty shelter. He was a fugly little thing but my daughter loved him from the moment she saw him - even though there were other better looking and more fun kitten crawling all over her. She wanted this orange male kitty. He came from a crazy woman's house where the owner had abused his mother, so he needed extra love.

He is neutered but he is outdoors as well as in (he is a natural hunter! I often find dead gophers, birds, and field mice on my doorstep) and he needs his claws for climbing and protection.

I don't understand. I thought you said you were getting the cat declawed. If you don't go to a vet, who is going to do it for you? Your uncle Leroy down at the farm?

If you aren't getting the cat declawed, why are you making such a huge deal out of it? If you're trying to insult someone by calling them an animal activist I don't think it's gonna work.

I love orange tabbies, aren't they always male?

I can't remember if orange tabbies are always male... the kitty shelter lady said some years they have tons and tons of either orange or black or whatever color. Last year was not an orange year, so she told my daughter she was very lucky to find her perfect kitty.

When he claws the furniture (which he so DOES, because it is a cat's way of marking their territory), I spray him with the water bottle. All he has to do is see you reach for the bottle now and he stops. Hopefully, he'll stop altogether one day. He has scratching posts he uses.

I posted earlier in the thread about our declawing experience. I truly believe my cat did not suffer, and she is a very happy and well-adjusted cat now. But I also would never declaw a cat for the sake of my furniture or for a minor scratch. After owning cats for half my life, she is the first I've ever had declawed.

They do tend to be males, but I have seen a couple female orange tabbies.

I still think that you and your bf are making no sense, krystineM. Are you or are you NOT getting the cat declawed?

I REALLY suggest you check out the SoftPaws site http://www.softpaws.com/ before considering to declaw your cat.

If your BF is against taking it to the vet, then how are you planning on getting it declawed? You cannot get a cat declawed safely without going to a vet, and a vet is not going to do it for free. Or, are you just going to get rid of it?\

You pet doesn't hug you? It doesn't show affection at all? It doesn't come rub up against your leg and purr and lay in your lap with its eyes half closed as you rub his ears? Oh wait, you probably don't do any of that. To be honest, if I were your cat, I probably wouldn't show YOU any affection either!! You have to give love to get love.

Have you even tried ANY of the advice given on this topic? Have you tried a squirt bottle? Does the cat have enough scratching posts of its own?

Look. It sounds to me like you are NOT ideal pet-owners. If you know of a no-kill shelter near you, I'd heavily advise you take your cat over there and give it up for adoption. I don't want to see your cat abused for another day, and I certainly don't want to see it declawed if you haven't even tried to discourage it from clawing in the first place!!

No pet deserves to live in a loveless home, and you two CLEARLY do NOT love your cat; you've made that quite clear. Not just because you want to declaw it; AyaMiyaki declawed her cat, but she tried everything she could to get it to stop before she did it. I bet if she'd know about soft-paws, she would have bought them!! It's your overall attitude about animals in general that make you terrible pet owners.

I feel like I'm getting repetitive, but what do you think about the SoftPaws product? Would you have used that as an alternative to declawing if you'd know about it?

Where did my post go? Weird... I know it'll show up the moment I post again *rolls eyes*

So cute!! The claws come in a lot of different colors, including clear, white, black, blue, red, yellow, green, purple, grey, and even some two-toned ones!

That cat in front of the computer screen looks like a stuffed animal! I love him/her and want to bring him/her home to live with me. I will love it and cuddle it and keep it forever!

Aww! And they come in different colors!!! How funny!

That's a great idea, Eiri, thank you for telling us.

We have a small army of cats, because of people who make bad choices, and we have no problems with their claws. We've put time and effort into training them.

so you have to do that yourself? my cat would probably end up glued to the floor. it looks like a cool idea though. i'm gonna talk to my guy about it when he gets home. they don't chew them off or anything?

You can have it done by a vet or groomer if your cat won't let you. Do you already trim his/her claws regularly? You can also try getting your cat acclimated to you touching his/her paws. The site suggests doing it when you cat is sleepy.

I read a few cases where the cats chewed one or two of them off, but the glue seems pretty strong!!

i tried gluing something with nail glue once and my fingers ended up stuck together LOL.

yeah, i trim her claws but she usually only lets me do maybe three or four at a time before she starts getting irritated. i just try to remember to catch her when she's relaxed but it's hard because she tends to run to her food dish whenever someone gets up to get something. i have to carry the clippers around in my pocket or buy a holster for them or something lol.

Eiri, those pics are priceless! My favorite is the third one from the top.

And when you said this:

I understand the frustration. I get that way in the circumcision debates. A poster comes in to the thread, reads 10 posts in a row telling how gruesome and painful and unnecessary circumcision is, and then states that they will be having their newborn circumcised. DID THEY EVEN READ THOSE POSTS???? I don't want to derail this, so back to declawing...

So how can people still justify it after they learn about alternatives like
SoftPaws???
