Q: Allergic reaction to Nuva Ring
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 1st, 2008
I started taking the nuva ring 2 months ago and had a severe allergic reaction. my feet and hands swelled, and i was covered in a rash and hives on my upper legs, arms, feet, hips, and stomach. Ever since then i randomly get a rash in those same areas or hives, and my feet swell. could it be something else?

Allergies toward contraceptives such as the Nuva Ring or antihistamines such as Benedryl are very rare but still possible. You're not required to take those two medicines and can postpone using them, but you could be allergic to substances other than those two. You can perform an allergic skin-based test(s) to identify the substances that you are, in fact, allergic to. Sometimes allergies can be due to infective diseases like Hepatitis B, for example. Therefore, in addition to the skin test(s) you can request standard blood analyses (blood count, sedimentation rate, liver status, kidney status, hemoglobin…) plus IgE-antibodies levels. You can consult a dermatologist about your condition in order to begin the process.

rash with Nuva Ring
The same thing happened to me! I still get a rash randomly in the same places. I even was prescribed steriods to make the rash go away, and it never did. I think a few of us out there are just really allergic to that Ring!

nuva ring
I didn't have a rash but I did develop a fever and stayed in the bed for 4 days with pain in my side so severe I didn't want to get up and use the restroom. I removed the ring and went to the ER, first they told me it was gallstones- it was not. I had a bladder infection and they could not tell me what was wrong with me. When it was time to put the ring back in i started to experience the same symptoms and quickly removed the ring. I guess some womens bodies are not made for Nuva ring and I woulnd't use any other birth control you have to put in your vagina to be on the safe side.

Nuva ring
You ladies are lucky. I was on the bc for a month and a half and ended up in the hospital for a week and a half with a blood clot in my brain! I could not believe it!
SO now I am on Blood Thinners. I have a huge question though. I was on oral contraceptive b4 I started with the nuva ring and was just fine. After I got out of the hospital with the blood clot, the Dr.s took tons of blood for testing. My blood was free of any and all blood clotting disorders. My question is can I be put back on oral bc if I stay on the blood thinners?? No one can answer it because it is so rare that a female of my age, 22 who is obviously still fertile, should get a blood clot!! Any onfo on this matter would be awesome!
