Q: Why Do ProLife Advocates Care?
asked by: Birch on January 31st, 2008
Extremely eHealthy
Could prolife advocates please explain why they care so much?

I've left this purposefully vague because I want people to interpret that question freely.

Would love to hear the responses...thanks!

I care because I believe every person deserves a chance at life.

I also believe every person deserves a chance at life - that's why I'm pro-choice.

No. Thats just selfishness. You believe a person can choose to kill another for purely selfish reasons.

Um hi, a baby and an unborn baby aren't the same thing. A born baby is a person, yeppers. An unborn baby is not.

My as yet unanswered challenge still stands.

Prolifers: please tell me exactly how my choice to abort a pregnancy 14 years ago had a direct impact on your daily life then and now. Describe the impact it had and the consequences of it.

So you want preferential decision making capability in women's medical decisions?

I have nothing against your opinion. It's all the peripherals one would have to utilize to get their opinion made into the law of the land for everyone.

Let's say that I'm going to start the "Create the Babies" foundation. Every woman must give birth at least twice in their life. The will be raped if they don't consent. I think this is best because women want babies. It's in their best interest. They don't truly become a valued person unless they have a baby. And babies are the best thing ever. That's my opinion. So it becomes law, and you are raped repeatedly because of my opinion. I don't care what you want. I don't care if raping you is harmful. My opinion is best and in your best interests. And look, you get a wonderful baby out of the deal! Isn't that lovely?

That's exactly what the prolife philosophy makes me feel like. It makes my skin crawl.

Well said, Birch. Prolife arguments for forcing gestation seem so much like arguments in favor of slavery and rape to me. All three advocate the forced use of people's bodies for the gain of someone or something else, whether it be for physical labor, twisted pleasure or gestation.

I cant imagine why no one touched this baited thread for a couple days.

You ask why we care and then the first person to give an answer sweet as can be you guys jump all over her. There is no wrong answer to this question. Why does it make you people so mad when we defend that unborn are babies. And life begins at conception. Well I know, I know exactly why it makes you so angry.

No, it's a biological fact. Of course, all you can think of when you heard the word "baby" is a fully grown, ready to be born or already-here baby. When I talk about an unborn baby that is going to be aborted, I mean something about an inch to four inches long that possibly has a tail, no eyelids, and no ears. It has missing or undeveloped body parts and organs. It may not have individual fingers, but webs. It may not even have toes. Its brain is not much more than a blob at the top of the spinal cord. It is incapable of sensations because the spine is currently working independently to connect itself to immature muscle fibers, and so the spine is not even truly connected to the brain. Its skin is transparent like glass. THAT is the "baby" I discuss. It is not a person, not in any medical OR legal sense that you can define a born person. It has human DNA, and that's the only reason you feel the right to remove a woman's right to control her body.

No, I don't believe that a person can kill another [person]. I believe that women, be it for selfish reasons or to save their lives, should be allowed to exercise bodily autonomy at whatever cost, even if this includes the death of parasitic organisms feeding off that body.

I consider it selfish, oppressive, and misogynistic to believe that women should be forced to repudiate their bodily rights and self-determination for nine months in order to contribute further to our population crisis and bursting adoption and fostering system and give birth to a child they never wanted.

I urge you to read this article on abortion and why the pro-life movement is so weak.

People are free to respond as they wish. Look at you: you didn't even respond to the thread; just a big ol' knock on all those angry prochoicers.

How dare we be upset. I'm sorry. I'll just let you take over my personal medical decisions without a peep.

Of, and one of "your clan" was the first to post an angry response.

I have nothing against your opinion. It's all the peripherals one would have to utilize to get their opinion made into the law of the land for everyone.

I don't get why people who don't want babies have sex. That's what it is there for.

And your argument really makes no sense to me. No one is TELLING these women to go out and have sex and get pregnant. You have sex and you get pregnant IT'S NO ONE'S FAULT BUT YOUR OWN (assuming you weren't raped).

I think you missed what I meant...

The point is that your opinions make me feel like I'm raped over and over again. I'm just telling you how your opinions make me feel. I want you to understand where I am coming from.

Your need to have preferential decision making capabilty in my personal medical decisions makes me feel like I am violated over and over again. Does that make sense?

Here's why I, a person who does not want children, has sex. Maybe I can help you understand...

I'm a 29 year old woman in a five year committed relationship. Sex is a very large part of intimacy, and I love this man with all my heart and want to share this special thing (sex) with him. Not only do I value the spiritual connection we share, but also the physical. He is smokin' hot and I am a sexual creature. I would not abstain from sex forever to appease prolife individuals or because I might get pregnant.

Does that help you to understand the prochoice (or at least this prochoicer) philosophy better?

Also bear it in mind that women who can't safely carry pregnancy or don't wish to generally try over and over again to electively sterilize and we're refused at every turn. Women who don't breed have as much right to a loving relationship as women who do, and for that to happen with a man, sex is usually a requirement.

Until things change as far as guaranteed birth control, elective sterilization without argument or males choosing to love and remain faithful to a wife that won't put out, women will be at risk of pregnancies that they either cannot or will not carry to term.
