I've been experimenting with my most recent cold sore outbreak to try to mimimize the length of the cold sore. So far, so good. Two days and now it's scabbing. Are there any other tips that you can share with me? I have :

applied Zovirax cream from the time of tingling til now (5-6 times daily)
applied L-Lysine, the amino acid that kills the virus (2-3 times daily)
taken oral zinc supplements (to help dry the skin)
patted the area with a warm, wet black tea bag (to dry out the blister)
slept 8 hours at night
taken long baths to de-stress

Any other tips?

Sorry, Rosie...these are confirmed for just HSV - 1. When you get a genital herpes outbreak, do you feel tingling?

yeah usually. I have tested positive for herpes 1 but I have never had a sore on the outside of my mouth only on the inside.

Hi Sweetie! Me Fairy*Godmother
Hi, I like the Abreva, although its quiet pricey......My dentist prescribed Valtrex and the fist sign of tingling of a cold sore, I take this........wish I'd had it years earlier. Have suffered from "fever blisters" since I was about 5. My stepdaughter swabs hers with witch hazel or alcohol.....OUCH OUCH OUCH...painful, but dries it up. Oh, and Ether is good if you can get your hands on it!

Wash your hands ALL the time.

And your keyboard, too Smile.

Plus, be careful when drying your face or body with a towel...because you can transmit an herpes virus (via the towel) to other parts of your body.

How long does it take to recover from that? Is it the same as a fever blister? Does it crust?

Also, I don't know about your beliefs, or anything...but I found this cool spiritual lesson about what to do when we get an outbreak:

• Trust in your Higher Power and stop worrying about so many things. Eat better, take time to walk outside, and get enough sleep at night.

ENCOURAGEMENT—We can only see a little way before us, but your Higher Power sees everything. S/He knows all about our needs, and S/He cares for us. S/He sits above the confusion and distractions of the earth, and all things are opened to Her divine survey. From Her great and calm eternity, S/He orders that which Her providence sees is best.
