schizophrenic and manic depressive ? Posted: 01-28-08 15:29pm
For as long as I can remember I have beens
strange; my parents have remarked that I
am always in my own world, i have violent
mood swings, and I hear voices and see
things.
The voices I hear are very varied and they
tell me evrything to do and help me, but
there is one who is always there, who is
my friend.
I see strange phantasmal lights and
shadows at the edge of my vision and lie
in bed at night flailing in
fear...whenever I am in darkness i see
them everywhere and I am so scared...
I am very introverted and even my parents
say that I am always in my own world; I am
also manic depressive.
If it means anything, I am only a teenager
and my family knows none of this. i am
also very intelligent, being a member of
Mensa with an IQ of 162.
Please help me!

I am sorry to hear you are so distressed.
Perhaps the strange lights you see are
more to do with a visual problem than a
mental one. Have you had a recent eye
test? You must mention this as it could
be imprtant to an ophthalmologist.
It sounds as though the voices you hear ar
at least benign and friendly but I
understand how upsetting this could be.
You know you have to deal with this. You
know you have to tell someone, either a
member of your family, a counsellor at
school or a doctor. There is no getting
over that. Perhaps a change in your meds
is all that ios needed.
Your IQ is impressive so please, use it
and take good care of yourself!

Thank you for your support. The problem is
a little more complex than that though.
While in the daytime the voices are
evidently benign, as you say, when in
darkness they turn sinister (different
voices) and the same colours scare me to
death. It is not an eye problem; I am
shortsighted and even when I wear my
glasses this happens.
I also cannot tell anyone about this; I
want to be a quantum physicist and they
simply will not allow me to study physics
if I have a psych record; that is what my
parents told me when I slit my wrists.

Sounds like your parents were making stuff
up to keep you from harming yourself. What
connection on Earth there could be between
a psych record and quantum physics?

Yes, that's what I thought - and it didn't
stop John Forbes Nash, did it?
Do you have very pushy parents?
By the way, I am also very short-sighted
and am troubled by floaters, shapes,
flashes of light and colours, caused by
central serous retinopathy. CSR tends to
affect highly-stressed males more than
females so I wouldn't rule that out.
However, I adhere to my original advice
which is that quantum physics or not, you
must talk to someone about your fears. It
would surely be better to have a
controlled psychiatric condition than to
be dead, would it not?

Well I do have pushy parents, but I am not
sure...although I thank you shonster for
the information about the
short-sightedness....it is reassuring - at
least if I am not seeing things but only
hearing voices then I am not completely
psychotic. My problem does not (yet) cause
me to harm others around me and I have
stopped cutting (I hope).

Also, although I am not paranoid, I always
have the feeling that I am being watched
by people I know (like, scryed).

Here I am again...once more on the subject
of Schizophrenia...is it common for
someone as young as me to contract
Schizophrenia or indeed any mental
illness? Also, I have recently been afraid
that I will start cutting again. The
circumstances thatled to me cutting in the
first place have changed, but there
is...hard to explain.
Almost an addiction to cutting, even
though my life has been getting better.
Also, the voices are like an unyielding
cacophony and I am thought wierd by my
schoolmates because I 'talk to myself'.
What am I to do?

Actually Schizophrenia can begin showing
itself at a very early age. Have you tried
to determine which kind of Schizophrenia
you have?

you're probably right, especially if you
experience both at or near the same time.

My mother had a friend who was very smart,
like extreamly smart, he was a
mathematical genious. he was so smart that
he thought he could fly, and he jumped off
a bridge thinking that he would fly off of
it, but he died. Im am sorry if this
scares you, but mabe because you are so
smart, mabe your mind is playing tricks on
you. my mother is also a mathematicl
genious and her IQ is not as big as yours.
Please take care of yourself, you are very
blessed because you are so smart. SO
please dont do anything dumb like slit
your wrists again and put your smarts to
use when you are older and become a
quantum physicist.

wouldn't we all just love to have the
voices explained to us.
What are they? Why do they happen?
