..if your allowed to add someone to your insurance if they're not a dependent or spouse?

Since we'll be moving out, I'll no longer be under my insurance and Thomas has insurance from his work. I didn't know if we'd have to be married though for him to add me to it.

Any ideas? Confused

Yeah, you do. We couldn't get Jay on my parents insurance, and we were talking about what I'd do for insurance once I moved in with Jacob. His mom couldn't put me on their plan.

I think it depends on how long you and thomas have been living under the same roof. Here in australia if you have been living together for longer than 12 months i think you are regarded as a defacto couple so we are pretty much married by law just dont have the piece of paper saying that we are husband and wife!

Age might have alot to do with it as well *shrugs*!Here your still classified as a child till your 18 years so any type of insurance is under your parents/guardians name!

Because things are alot different over there i probably would give you wrong ideas!!

Good luck with it amy!!Smile

Shane had me added to his insurance but he has to sign a whole crapload of paperwork, pretty much saying that we're commonlaw married (But I don't think that's the word they used). I can ask him when he wakes up what all he had to sign & all that.

Some insurance policies may have different rules about that so you should get Thomas to call and fins out.

You live in a common law state and stated that you have been together X amount of time. Common law is what? Considered as what? MARRIED.

COMMON LAW MARRIAGE. Wink It is like the benefit of marriage without the actual marriage. Western states don't do that.

I know that in Illinois, we don't have the common law marriage and I am under insurance at my work and could not add Adam until we got married, no exceptions. But that's really all I have to go by...sorry I couldn't be more help.

In my state (Arizona) you cannot have anyone on your insurance unless you are married or they are your child. But each state if different. I would give the insurance company a call and ask them or have your BF call or contact his Human Resources Dept.

Before my husband and I were married, I added him on to my insurance under a "domestic partnership". But not all companies or insurance plans offer it as an option. I don't remember if I had to say how long we'd been living together Confused
