Hi my name is John age 39 and i`m from London.
I have had gout for about 8 years and i coped with it pretty well so far, as soon as i feel an attack coming on i start using Deplofenic and gout pain goes in about 3 days.
This time it`s different, i`ve had this attack for 6 days now and the pain has been very bad everyday. I went to the doctor 2 days ago as i have never had an attack like this, the doc put me on Indometacin as they are ment to be stronger in controling the pain and the uric acid but so far no different.
I had blood test yesterday to see if i qualify for a pill which prevents gout from attacking as long as i take one a day forever which is what i want.
I can`t sleep due to the uncomfortable and painfull my foot is at the moment and getting very fed up with it.
How do you guy`s cope with a bad attack.

To relieve the sever pain, you can go back to your doctor to ask for a steroid injection, or to ask for some opioid pain killer to take by mouth. He/she should have given it to you when you saw him/her 2 days ago to save you the agony! Indomethacin won't work well now because you waited for too long before taking it. The result of the blood uric acid (UA) test taken during the gout attack is meaningless because the UA level can go higher or lower than usual during the attack.

Warning: Don't take Allopurinol (the once a day pill) until the attack has completely subsided. Otherwise, it will worsen and prolong the attack. More info can be found in Emergency Gout Treatments section of http://www.ICuredMyGout.org . Take care.

The doc said not to take Allopurinol until this attack has gone away, i`ll ring the doc up and ask for the other stuff you mentioned.

Last night the pain got so bad my wife took to to my local hospital where they gave me Colchicine which worked and i got some sleep last night.
It`s be a week now this attack started and i hope it goes very soon as i`m now getting depresed by it.

Very glad the pain has subsided. Keep some spare Colchicine around in case gout returns in the future.

My guess is that your doctor wants you to take Allopurinol to lower your uric acid level, to be on low purine diet, ... About 80% of gout patients who took Allopurinol are happy with the results. This info may help you decide whether you want to take it (for life) or not. Initiation of Allopurinol often triggers gout attacks.

3 days ago i started taking Allopurinol and today i feel an attack starting again. I stopped taking Indometacin on Friday but i have had to start taking them again as i feel the attack.
Is this ment to happen as i thought the Allopurinol was suppose to stop an attack from happening again.

reaction to allopurinol
Allopurinol is doing its job and is reducing the amount of uric acid in the blood. To compensate, the body tries to dissolve some of the existing UA crystals to bring up the level of UA in the blood and that's when the immune system notices the crystals and causes a gout attack. Eventually -- I don't know how soon -- these attacks should stop. The good news: you are getting rid of some of those "evil" crystals and reducing the possibility of future gout attacks.

This lastest attack has stopped but i my toe is still a bit sore, i went to the pub and only had 2 pints of Guiness and an orange juice, the next day i had a slight attack so back on the pain killers for 2 days.
Looks like now that it`s alcohol that triggers my gout off, so no more alcohol for me for ever. Crying or Very sad

Sorry the attack is back. May I ask:

1) How much orange juice did you have with Guiness?

2) How much orange juice do you drink a day normally? Did it bother your gout when you drank OJ alone?

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. BTW, citric fruits including OJ can trigger gout in some people. Take care.
