Q: tongue cracks
asked by: bnweber78 on January 23rd, 2008

Hello,

About 2 weeks ago, I noticed some cracks on my tongue. Specifically one large one right down the middle. They can be painful, specifically in the morning and whenever I eat anything spicy or use heavy mouthwash like Listerene. I wear a nightguard and at first thought this was causing my tongue to crack. Is there any advice or suggested way to treat this?

Thanks a million!

Are your fissures caused by drymouth, Dyan? It may be possible that the OP has a severely dry mouth and that his tongue is drying out at night time, which could be made worse by the mouth piece.

here is a definition that i found

A chronic inflammation of the tongue characterized by distinct somewhat circular groupings of lesions bounded by a white band. Also called benign migratory glossitis, erythema migrans linguae, pityriasis linguae.

Interesting. Well, I don't know if that sounds like what the OP has... he hasn't come back.
