this seems to be a hot topic. I posted
this reply in another forum and think it
applies here too. I think I wrote in
another post that sometimes a change of
scenery - or even change in career - can
be a good thing. But here is my post from
the other one about our jobs. Hope it
helps.
I see there are other topics about this
issue. It makes me want to keep my
personal information to myself and work
and pray that I can keep up my
performance. I think I will post my
previous reply on the other topics as
well.

I guess the real question here is if you
got fired or let go or whatever because
you were bp or if it was because for
whatever reason you were not doing your
job. It is a big responsibility that I
handle in my job and if for some reason I
can not do my job then others in my
company hurt and my job is in jeopardy.
For example if my bp causes me to fall
asleep on the job or make mistakes that
cause data loss then I would probably lose
my job because of the sleeping or
mistakes. I could also fall asleep and
make mistakes because I spent all night
partying or had a drinking problem or was
just lazy. In the end, it would be my
performance that was the problem and issue
instead of the cause that led to the lack
of performance. What we have to do is go
above and beyond to still do the job we
were hired for. I know that sounds easy,
but that is life. If the company is a
large company with many open positions,
then I think the company would offer to
move me to a position of lesser
responsibility (and more than likely
lesser pay) until I could get my
performance back up. What was the reason
you were let go? Did they blame it on the
bp or on the performance or on something
else?

yeah... i just read this on the other
topic you started and replied... a short
one. unlike this one, as i am seeking
advice tonight and trying to support at
least a few on here too.
personally, i felt that i needed to
explain myself because it got to the point
that i was my performance level/quality
went down and thereby compromising the
company. it is a small company, big
clients and budgets, and i ran the entire
art dept. for almost 3 years by myself...
mostly. so, if i was not functioning to my
potential, which was excellent for most of
my time there, the entire show suffered.
and, like you pointed out, lack of
performance in the eyes of any employer
who does not know why the performance is
lacking does jeopardize your job. however,
i feel that if the lack of performance
reaches the level in which mine did, that,
rather than leaving them to assume/decide
the reason, i'd rather let them know that
i have a real illness and i thought i
could be, even in some small way,
accommodated. because i'm not a drunk or
whatever they may come up with.
having said that, each situation is
different.
